Panthers Fall to Mounties

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team lost to Mount Aloysius 77-68 in an up and down contest that saw the teams exchange multiple scoring runs.

  • Daizjah Brown got the Panthers on the board from the foul line on the opening possession of the game, but the Panthers were unable to score for the next 5 minutes, allowing the Mounties to build a 12-2 lead. Hannah Lary entered the game off the bench and made an immediate impact, scoring 8 unanswered points to pull the Panthers back to within one possession. The visitors were able to push their lead to 7 points with a minute to go in the quarter, but a Cassidy King free throw and Hannah Lary layup sent the game to the first break with the Panthers trailing 20-16.
  • The Panthers locked down on defense at the beginning of the second quarter, keeping the Mounties to just three points in the first 7 minutes of the period. In that span, the Panthers scored 10 points of their own to take a three-point lead. Alexa Ackerman got the rally started with a three-pointer and after a Cailey Barnett layup, Ackerman hit a second long ball to give the Panthers their first lead of the game at 24-23. Following two minutes of stops, Hannah Lary made a pair of free throws to put the Panthers up 26-23 but quickly saw the game tied on the following possession on a Mount Aloysius three. The Panthers were unable to maintain their momentum for the remainder of the quarter, however, as they were only able to muster an Avery Benzel free throw and Daizjah Brown layup as the Mounties outscored Pitt-Bradford 11-3 over the last 2:50 of the half to take a 34-29 lead to the break.
  • Brown came out of the break firing, driving to the basket, and converting a three-point play to open the half. After a Mount Aloysius putback layup, Cailey Barnett drained a three to cut the deficit to one point. The teams exchanged baskets for the next few minutes, keeping the differential at one point, but Mount Aloysius once again closed the quarter on a run, outscoring the Panthers 10-3 over the last 4 minutes of the third to take a 53-45 lead to the final quarter.
  • The Mounties continued their run in the final quarter, scoring the first 5 points of the period to extend their lead to 13 points. Brown was able to end the rally with back-to-back baskets to get the deficit back to single digits.
  • Down 10 with 6:24 to go, the Panthers were able to score 7 straight to quickly cut the Mountie lead to just three points. Cailey Barnett hit a mid-range jumper from the baseline to start the run and after a stop, Cassidy King drove to the basket for a layup. The Panthers were able to get another quick stop on the following possession and Barnett took advantage, hitting a three to put the Panthers down 61-58. The Mounties quickly answered the Panther rally with back-to-back layups and Outscored the Panthers 16-10 over the final three minutes to secure the victory.

Daizjah Brown and Cassidy King each scored 16 points in the game to lead the Panthers. Brown shot 6-10 from the field and added 4 of 5 from the line. She also collected 5 rebounds. King was 7-11 in the game, led the Panthers with 8 rebounds, and also had 2 assists and 4 steals. Cailey Barnett added 15 points on 50% shooting and Hannah Lary came off the bench for 12 points. Lary also had 6 assists and 4 steals.

The Panthers (2-18, 0-12 AMCC) will be right back in action on Wednesday, as they host Medaille for another AMCC tilt. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. in KOA Arena.
