MYRTLE BEACH, SC – After their 3-1 victory over Saint Elizabeth this morning, the Hilbert College softball team secured their first back-to-back wins during their spring training week down in South Carolina. The streak was broken just a few hours later when they suffered an 11-2 loss off the bats of Wesley College.
Hilbert completed their southern swing and they begin their travel back to Western New York with the hopes of playing a home softball game on campus sometime this spring.
Jumping to the middle of the batting order in the third inning, Hilbert took advantage of
Rachel Collier's and
TylerLynn Langer's singles.
Lindsay O'Neil and
Elissa Hall took turns knocking in the previous two batters to take a 2-0 lead. The Hawks were ready to tack on more runs, but with bases loaded, St. Elizabeth came up with an easy out and ended the potential down pour of runs.
The Eagles picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth inning which put a scare into the Hawks. But Hilbert responded in the 7th.
Elissa Hall singled to center field and made it all the way to third base off an error. In the meantime,
Phoenix Rollek made her way around the horn and scored the final run of the game.
Elissa Hall went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs while
Rebecca Bailey went 2 for 3 and picked up two steals in the game.
Victoria Dzaak went 5 innings with two strikeouts and gave up four hits.
TylerLynn Langer picked up the save while covering the final two innings with two strikeouts.
Things were looking good for Hilbert in the start of their final game of the Fastpitch Dreams tournament. Wesley College took advantage of three singles to build a 3-0 lead at the top of the 1st inning. But Hilbert rushed back as Langer and Collier got the Hawks in the books in the bottom of the inning to trim their deficit to a single run.
Wesley then tacked runs on in three of the next four innings to secure an 11-2 5th inning victory.
Wesley doubled the Hawks offensive production finishing with 14 hits vs. Hilbert's seven.
Elissa Hall went 2 for 2 and
Rachel Collier (1 RBI) and
Jenna Castricone went 1 for 2.
Jaelyn Gotham was the solo Hawks in the circle; she added a single strike out to her career total but added two walks as she covered five innings.
Hilbert's first regularly scheduled non-conference game scheduled at D'Youville College for March 16 has already been postponed due to excessive snow still on the Spartans' turf field.
