Softball Plays Through Rain Delay and Drops Two At Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa.  - Fulfilling the AMCC series commitment, Hilbert College softball made an unusual long distance, mid-week appearance in central Pa. today.

Fast moving storms forced a delay in the Hawks and Lions opening game while the nightcap went off without a hitch.

Altoona won G1 4-2 and stormed back in the bottom of the 5th to earn an 8-7 sweep.

Hilbert dropped to 3-11 in AMCC action while the hosts improved to 5-7.

GAME ONE

Marisa McIntyre tossed all six innings and struck one out, walked seven and gave up four earned runs off three hits.

Sam Shallcross' RBI double in the 6th lifted the Hawks with their first run and Gabriella Bongiorno's double in the top of the 7th gave Hilbert another life.  The Hawks scored their second run off a wild pitch in the 7th.

Morgan Grosch went 2-for-3 leading Hilbert as they finished with seven hits while stranding four runners on base.

GAME TWO

Hilbert extended their 4-2 lead to 7-2 by the middle of the 6th.  The Lions roared back with six runs in the bottom half to earn a come-from-behind 8-7 win in the nightcap.

Melanie Basile did double duty as she connected at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 and pitched five strong innings before leaving the mound after facing six batters in the bottom of the 6th. McIntyre closed the inning giving up a pair of hits before getting three batters out.

Basile walked three and gave up eight earned runs off seven hits from the circle.

Bongiorno (2RBI) and Morgan McNeill each went 2-for-4 and Maia Delaney's triple knocked in a run in the 4th.

Hilbert (8-16) returns to Hamburg late tonight and is set to host Penn State Behrend in a 3pm DH Wednesday, April 24.

The Hawks softball team will then close their season with their final home game of the season Saturday, April 27 against Pitt-Greensburg.  Make sure you stop by the the diamond to help celebrate the seven softball players who will be graduating in either May 2019 or December 2019.  Those student-athletes are:  Rachel Allen, Gabriella Bongiorno, Morgan Grosch, Morgan McNeill, Nateal Papasergi, Hannah Prenoveau and Katelyn Proy.
