KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Playing their first opponent in a full week, the Hilbert College baseball team traveled for a non-conference set of games at Keuka College this afternoon. The Wolves rallied with late-inning runs to claim a 5-2 victory over the Hawks in game one and a 6-1 win in the night cap.
Hilbert finished with seven hits but left six men on base while the Wolves collected six hits, left only two on base but scored five runs in the opening game victory.
Paul Wujek and
Anthony Wurstner's single opened the game and
Ryan Bonafede poked a single RBI to left field to force a pitching change.
Sal Carroccia hit a sac fly to score Wurstner and had the team iin position to score again but a pop-up ended the inning with Hilbert up 2-0.
Carroccia faced six batters and moved to DH in the bottom of the third inning so
Justin Hulbert could get back on the mound. Hulbert faced seven batters, giving up one hit before
Winfred Nelson took the ball to start the bottom of the fifth.
Keuka strung together three hits and scored two runs with an extra base and a stolen base mixed-in to force a 2-2 tie.
The Hawks added a single hit in each of the final innings with
Kevin Moore (3rd),
Eric Flores (4th), Wujek (5th) and Carroccia (6th) making contact but Keuka added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the first game.
Wujek went 2-for-4 as Carroccia and
Tristan Aldinger (0-1) were credited with a single strike out from the mound.
The Hawks had a tough go at the plate in the night cap as they finished with only three hits.
Carroccia and Flores went 1-for-2 and Bonafede went 1-for-3 with all three hits coming in the first two innings.
Carroccia, who reached first base thanks to a short stop error in the 4th, was the only Hawks to leave the batting area the rest of the game.
Michael Voveris went four innings giving up six hits and three earned runs along with three strike outs.
Andrew Cartaginese finished the game on the mound as the Hawks move to 5-12 overall.
They return to action this weekend with a single game at Alfred State April 15 and then on to Cresson, Pa for an AMCC match-up against Mount Aloysius April 16.
