Utica College used the corner kick as a weapon as they defeated Alfred State 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Cody Green scored the opening goal of the game in the 15th minute when he bent a corner kick into the net. A little less than ten minutes Green sent another corner into the box that Daniel Varsames was able to connect with to make it 2-0. Utica held a 7 to 3 shot advantage in the 1st half.
Utica made it 3-0 in the 56th minute when Green sent a corner into the box that went off a Pioneer defender and into the back of the net.
Alfred State turned up the offensive pressure and got on the board in the 78th minute when David Benson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored after getting a pass from Andres Mateos (Batavia). The Pioneers threatened for more by Foti Xidias made multiple diving saves to preserve the Utica lead. Alfred State held a 7 to 6 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes.
Xidias finished the day with six saves to earn the victory.
The Pioneers begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Wells for a 6 p.m. start vs. the Express.
