Hawks Improve to 3-3 After Big Win Over Alfred

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – The Hilbert College women's basketball team rushed out to an early 8-0 lead and then coasted to a 64-48 non-conference victory over Alfred University this afternoon.  Katelyn Proy couldn't miss from the field and led all players with 20 points and six blocks.

Shannon Rogers kept her personal double-double streak moving with a 12 point/10 rebound effort.  The second-year forward also shared game-high assist leader honors with Kelsi Ebert as they both posted four.

Emily Speidel netted her first double-figure game (11) after connecting on three 3-pointers and second-year Jennifer Colvin canned a pair of 3's to add 10 points.

Alfred was led by Amanda Off's 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Saxons continue to search for their first win of the season.

Rogers put the Hawks on the board first and Speidel and Colvin followed with back-to-back long balls to force an Alfred time-out just 2:37 into the game. Hilbert took a commanding 20-6 lead into the second quarter and stretched their advantage to as many as 30 points (38-8) with 2:31 remaining.  AU closed the quarter with a 7-0 run but still had a 23-point hole to climb out of.

The point difference didn't change much in the third quarter after Alfred cut it to 38-17 after their first possession.  Alfred sliced the scored to 15 from the foul line but the Hawks responded before the break thanks to Rogers' freebies at the charity stripe to push it  back to 19 points.

Speidel knocked down other 3-pointer just 24-seconds into final period and Proy's ninth made bucket pushed Hilbert back up to 23-points.

Hilbert outscored Alfred 34-24 in the paint (47.2FG%) and made 5 of the 11 three pointers (45.5%).  The Hawks collected 11 offensive rebounds (46 total) as they limited AU to 26 boards.  While Hilbert shared the ball well on offense (18 assists) the Saxons were credited with only three assists.

Proy notched four blocks after 20 minutes of action which contributed to Alfred's 14% shooting from the field.  The purple and gold recovered in the second half, hitting 42% from the floor but struggled the entire game behind the arc (1-8).

The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of the Hawks' schedule opens this week when Hilbert travels to North Buffalo for their 8pm match at Medaille College.  The Hawks, at 3-3, have momentum on their side as they prepare to face the win-less Mavericks (0-4).
