Panthers Unable to Stay with Highlanders in 2nd Half, Fall 5-1

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team was back on their home field at the Kessel Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to Houghton University 5-1.

The Panthers were under pressure defensively right from the start, as Houghton took 3 shots in the first 6 minutes of play. They were able to open the scoring just before the 7-minute mark as a long shot from outside the 18-yard box beat Sadie Wood in goal and found the upper corner of the net. The Highlanders continued pressing after the goal, but Wood stepped up, making 6 more saves before the Panthers were able to record a shot of their own. Despite facing a strong attack from Houghton, the Panthers used a piece of individual brilliance to tie the game at 1 in the 41st minute. The Panthers drew a foul just outside the box on the right wing. Delaney Stowe stepped up and delivered a high, curling effort with her left foot that found the side netting for her 2nd goal of the season. The goal seemed to energize the Panthers as Riley Stowe was able to put another shot on target before the end of the half, but saw her effort saved.

Any momentum the Panthers had after the goal, was lost following the break, as Houghton took back control of the match. They were able to retake the lead in the 50th minute on a headed goal from a corner kick and then doubled their lead 6 minutes later on another long shot. Wood remained resilient in the PAnther goal, making four straight saves in a 20-minute span, but was unable to hold the Highlanders off as they added two more goals in a 5-minute span.

Delaney Stowe scored her second goal of the season in the game. It was the 2nd free-kick goal of her career. Riley Stowe was able to put a shot on goal, while McKenna Kelley registered the only other Panther shot of the game. Sadie wood made 15 saves in the game, with 8 coming in the first half and 7 in the 2nd.

The Panthers fall to 0-5 with the loss. They will return to action on Tuesday, September 20th, when they travel to Juniata. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
