Pioneers Sweep Medaille to Even AMCC Record

The Alfred State baseball team swept a doubleheader from Medaille to even up their AMCC record (3-3, 9-10 overall). The Pioneers scored three in the 5th in the opener to rally for a 4-2 victory in the opener and then scored in six of their eight at bats in a 11-1 win in game two.

Medaille scored two in the 1st inning when they collected three hits and Timothy Gaudioso drove in two with a RBI single to right field. Samuel Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) cut the lead in half when he lifted a sac fly in the bottom of the inning.

Andrew Santobuono (Franklin/Unatego) and Peter Grunzweig kept the game 2-1 until the Pioneers rallied in the 5th. Jack Henby (Hornell) led off the inning with a triple and scored on a RBI up the middle by Mike Gibson (Schenectady). Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies) gave Alfred State their first lead with a double to left to score Gibson. On batter later, Dickerson singled to left to add an insurance run.

Santobuono allowed seven hits and two runs in the complete game victory. He allowed just four hits after the 1st inning. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Dickerson finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBI while Pichardo was 2 for 3 with a RBI.

The Pioneers scored in six of their eight at bats in the nightcap. Danny Doran (Irondequoit) doubled to left in the 1st to get the scoring started. He scored two batters later on a Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) sac fly. Tim Holler (Brewster) scored on a throwing error and Picharodo followed with a RBI single in the 2nd. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) hit a sac fly in the 3rd and Pichardo collected another RBI single in the 4th. 

After Medaille scored their lone run of the game on a throwing error Dan Woodward (Honeoye) highlighted a three-run 5th inning with a two-run double. Holler collected a RBI single in the 7th and executed a double steal with Henby to make it 11-1.

Pichardo finished the day 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while Woodward was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Pichardo collected five of the Pioneers 16 hits on the day.

Garrett Mack (Avon) put together his third straight impressive start. He allowed just five hits and one unearned run while walking two and striking out 13. He retired the last 14 Mavericks to end the game including eight strikeout (struck out the side in the 9th).

The blue & gold head to Elmira on Thursday for a non-conference tilt with the Soaring Eagles. They return to AMCC play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader vs. Penn State Altoona.
