MBB: Wildcats Win Harold J. Brody Tournament at RIT With an 82-60 Win Over Pitt.-Bradford.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's basketball team won the Harold J. Brody Tournament Championship Game at RIT on Sunday 82-60 over the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers. The Wildcats got another great game from Josh Gregory en route to the Championship win. The Wildcats are now 4-2 this season and have now won three straight. 

 

MVP PERFORMANCE: 

After setting a new career-high on Saturday with 41 points, Josh Gregory followed up his game one performance with a 32 point game two effort. He also had 13 rebounds to record a double-double, leading the Wildcats to their second win of the tournament. Gregory also had a pair of blocks, a steal, and an assist. His 73 points and 19 rebounds in the two tournament games made him the obvious choice for the 2021 Harold J. Brodie Tournament MVP Award. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

In a similar fashion to the first game of the tournament, the Wildcats went down early and had to battle back. This time, the deficit was less and much earlier before Poly came charging back. The largest lead was eight points, a 10-2 lead for the Panthers, with 16:38 left in the first. Poly would come charging back with a 13-4 run to take the lead back with 7:55 remaining in the first. SUNY Poly would keep the lead for the rest of the game, growing their lead to 23 with under a minute left in the game. 

SUNY Poly dominated in the paint with a 50-32 advantage, dominated on the boards with a 42-26 advantage, and shot better from the field (51.8% - 38.6%). SUNY Poly was also great from the charity stripe, shooting 87% (20-23). 

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: 

  • Josh Gregory had a game-high 32 points on 11-17 from the field. He also had 13 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season. He also had a pair of blocks, a steal, and an assist. His performance led him to a Tournament MVP Award. 

  • Mitch Kernizan had a 15 point 10 rebound double-double for the Wildcats. He also had four assists and a block. His 15 point performance was his career-high with the Wildcats. He was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts. 

  • LJ Randle had had nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals for SUNY Poly. 

  • Alan Rodriguez was solid off the bench for the Wildcats. He scored nine points in 29 minutes of play with three assists, a steal, and a rebound. 

  • Jesse O'Dell had eight points, four assists, two rebounds, a steal, and a block in the game. 

  • Nathan Schneider was the lone double-digit scorer for the Panthers. He scored 26 on 9-18 shooting and had eight rebounds.
    Isaiah Archie, Greg Archie, and Trey Oyler each had six points for Pitt.-Bradford.

 

UP NEXT: 

The Wildcats will open up their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) schedule on Friday, December 3rd on the road at SUNY Canton. Tip-off between the Roos and the Wildcats is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
