Women's Soccer Keeps Winning Streak Alive after 3-2 Road Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – Shannon Rogers assisted twice and Jackie Morgan earned her first game-winning goal helping the women's soccer team  capture a 3-2 road win over Penn State Altoona this afternoon.  The Hawks remain unbeaten in AMCC action and stay on top in the league standings at 3-0.

"Coming into Altoona is always a difficult challenge but the squad was prepared to achieve on the road," said coach Kelly Starchok.  "Shannon Rogers had some great heads-up play in our attacking third and Jenna Castricone made two outstanding saves to keep the score 3-0 early in the second half."  "By holding them scoreless for 87 minutes, I am proud of our players and their commitment to defend all over the field."

Freshman Gina Mallone connected on the Hawks' first shot of the game in the 11th minute.  She used Shannon Rogers' feed and beat the Lions' keeper from a tough angle from just inside the right side of the box.

Less than four minutes later, Rogers assisted a second time when she placed a ball at Jennifer Colvin's feet.  Colvin, notching her 9th goal of the season, lifted the ball over the goal keeper and gave Hilbert a 2-0 lead which they carried to half time.

After intermission, Jackie Morgan found her second goal of the season when she converted on a ball that was deflected back into play at 63:06.

Things looked bright for the Hawks after 80 minutes of action, but Altoona made things interesting as play continued.

The Lions broke Hilbert's five consecutive game, shutout streak in the 87th minute when a headed ball sailed past Jenna Castricone into the back of the net.  Then less than two minutes later, and, with just over thirty-seconds left in the contest, Altoona knocked in their second marker of the game.  Castricone was credited with a save, but the loose ball landed at a toe of the hosts.

Hilbert finished with 12 shots and eight on goal.  Castricone collected eight saves on the 16 shots she faced.

Hilbert (8-2) remain on top in the AMCC league with a 3-0 record and with 8 wins.  Despite the ending of their shutout streak, the Hawks are currently running on a seven game win-streak and have earned six shutout victories this season.

The Hawks will travel to Bradford, Pa next week when they face Pitt-Bradford October 5 at 2pm.
