Panthers Lose to Penn State-Altoona after Furious 2nd Half Comeback

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Women's Basketball team erased a 9 point halftime lead at the beginning of the second half against Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, only to see the Lions respond at the end of the game to pull away from the Panthers and win the game 81-64.

Game Notes:

  • The Panthers fell behind early as the Lions came out of the gate shooting well. They scored the first 8 points of the game, forcing Pitt-Bradford into an early timeout. Shirleah Ragin got things started after the time out, hitting a mid-range jump shot to get the Panthers on the Board. 
  • Pitt-Bradford clawed their way back into the game, using tough defense and success at the free-throw line. They held the Lions to 1 point over a 4-minute span while scoring 8 of their own. They made 4 of 6 free throws bracketed by La'Shyra Williams buckets to cut the lead to 2. The Lions responded over the final 3:12 of the quarter, outscoring the Panthers 11-6 to take a 7 point lead to the second quarter.
  • Shaelyn Snipes started the second quarter with a mid-range bucket but saw the Lions respond to 13 points. 
  • Taylor Sutryk tallied 8 points in the quarter, hitting two threes on back to back possessions to keep the Panthers within shouting distance heading into the half.
  • After halftime, the Panthers' defense shut down the Lions, only allowing them to score 2 points in the first 5 minutes of the third. This led to a 11-2 Pitt-Bradford scoring run that saw them tie the score at 46. Shirleah Ragin started the rally with two consecutive driving lay-ups while Jasmin Miller, Snipes and Jenna Hicks all added baskets in the rally. Sutryk closed the rally with a free throw to tie the game at 46. 
  • Snipes hit a three to tie the game once again at 51, but the Lions closed the quarter by outscoring the Panthers 9-2 to reestablish a 7 point lead.
  • The Panthers stayed close to Penn-State Altoona at the beginning of the 4th, using 5 points from Williams and a layup from Hicks to cut the lead to 4 with 6:50 to play. 
  • Pitt-Bradford went cold over the final 6 minutes of play, mustering only 4 points, two Snipes free throws and a Miller jump shot with 30 seconds to go. In the same span, the Lions scored 17 points, including hitting 7 of 8 from the line down the stretch.

Leaders:

  • Shaelyn Snipes led the Panthers with 17 points. She shot 33% from the field, made 2 threes and hit 5 of 8 from the line.
  • Shirleah Ragin scored 13 points, was the team's leading rebounder with 9, dished out 4 assists and collected 5 steals.
  • Taylor Sutryk also finished in double figures scoring 10 points in the game. 

The Panthers are now 2-11 on the season with a 2-5 record in AMCC play. They will head to Buffalo for a midweek trip to D'Youville on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
