Women’s Volleyball Swept in AMCC Opener

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team saw its five-match win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions suffered a 3-0 loss to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Alfred State College at the Orvis Gymnasium.

In the teams' first conference tilt of the season, Alfred State (6-1, 1-0 AMCC) prevailed 25-19, 25-16, 25-21.

Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) had a match-high 10 kills and recorded a team-best 10.5 points, and she also contributed eight digs and one block assist. Makenna Bauer (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) added five kills, three digs, and one service ace.

Grace Shelley (York, PA/York Catholic) finished with three kills and a team-best two block assists, and Karlie Feathers (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) had three kills, five digs, one block assist, and a team-leading three service aces. Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) also had three kills, while Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) posted two kills.

Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) led the Lions in assists with 22, and she also recorded four digs, one ace, and one kill. Erin Lutz (State College, PA/State College) finished with a match-high nine digs to go along with one ace.

Penn State Altoona found itself in a big hole in the match's opening set, falling behind 15-8 before taking their second timeout of the set. But the Lions surged ahead after that, ripping off a 10-2 run to take an 18-17 lead. However, Alfred State countered with a run of their own, outscoring Penn State Altoona 8-1 the rest of the way to claim victory in the first set.

The Lions again fell behind in a big way during the second set, as the Pioneers worked their way out to a 20-9 advantage. Two aces from Feathers and a pair of kills by Barnhart helped Penn State Altoona get to within 10 points, 24-14, and an Alfred State error and block from Shelley and Feathers made it 24-16. But the Pioneers got a kill on the next point to close out the set and stake out a 2-0 lead in the match.

For the third straight set, Alfred State established a big lead early, as the home team secured a 19-9 advantage over the Lions. Penn State Altoona refused to go away quietly, going on a 10-1 run to cut the Pioneers' lead to 20-19. A kill from Barnhart and back-to-back kills from Shelley capped the run and prompted a timeout by Alfred State. After a service error, Barnhart's kill and Lutz's ace tied the score 21-21. But the Pioneers scored four straight points to end the set and the match in their favor.

Penn State Altoona women's volleyball wraps up its September schedule at home next Tuesday, September 28, hosting non-conference opponent Penn College for a 7:00 p.m. match in the Adler Arena.
