Big Second Half Secures Road Win Over Penn State Behrend

ERIE, Pa. - The Hilbert College women's basketball team picked up their 14th win of the season after defeating Penn State Behrend, 62-50 in a road Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game.

The Hawks improved to 9-2 in the league and dropped the Lions to 6-12 and 4-7 in the league.

Taylor Corts earned game-high scoring honors with 18 points as she led four of the Hawks' five starters into double figure scoring.  After sinking a pair of 3-point shots, the junior guard moved into a two-way tie with Kaitlyn Miller '08 as the women's basketball program's All Time 3-point Leader with 122 makes.

After a slow first quarter, where the Hawks were outscored 17-12, Hilbert had to fight to find their rhythm in the final three frames.  Behrend and Hilbert matched offensive efforts in the second session but the Hawks outscored the Lions 17-8 and 17-9 in the final two quarters for the win.

Katelyn Proy notched her second consecutive double double pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds while tossing in 10 points.  She also earned game-high honors in steals (5) as well as two blocks.

Ashley Repine added 14 points and nine rebounds as well as three blocked shots.  Emily Gawlak hustled to 13 points (3-for-6 from downtown), six assists, and four steals.

The Hawks found themselves down 14-5 midway through the first quarter as Behrend found their range beyond the arc. Repine secured a three-point play just ahead of Emma Fredo's pair at the foul line which pulled Hilbert within four.  But they settled for a four point deficit heading into the second quarter.

After Corts finished a pair of shots in the paint early, the Hawks went cold from the field.  Behrend extended their lead to double digits 26-16 thee minutes into the period while Hilbert struggled to hang onto the ball or sink a bucket.

Finally at 3:59, Gawlak stole the ball at the defensive arc and sprinted the length of the court for a transition score which unlocked the scoring drought.  Corts tossed another ball in the hoop before Gawlak drained a three off a kicked-out ball from Proy.

Proy kept the Hilbert run going with a defensive blocked shot that led to a Demi Battin score at the other end.  Repine finished in the lane and brought the Hawks within three points, but a Lion layup  set a 33-28 half time margin.

Behrend scored 14 points off Hilbert's 12 turnovers, even though the Lions were credited with only five steals by the break.

Corts drained a 3-pointer to start the third quarter, Repine made two from the foul line and good defense by Natassia West forced a Lion turnover.  The Hawks took over their first lead (36-35) when quick ball reversal led to a Gawlak's make from downtown.

Gawlak then used a high pick from Repine and unleashed her third deep 3-pointer extending the Hawks run before the start of the 4th.

Morgan McNeill lifted Hilbert into a nine point advantage behind an old fashioned three-point play midway through the period and Proy's conversion in the paint on the next trip created Hilbert's double digit lead which they held onto until the final horn.

The Hawks return to action this weekend when they travel to Cresson, Pa for their second game against Mt. Aloysius January 26 (1pm).  Hilbert won the December 8 AMCC Game of teh Week, 62-53 in Hamburg.
