BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Trine University women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season by defeating Penn State Behrend by the score of 2-0.
The Thunder wasted no time putting a shot on target in the contest, forcing a save from the opposition just over a minute into the contest. But the Lions would respond with a shot of their own just over a minute later, they would continue to pepper Trine junior keeper Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) throughout the contest. Sweigard was more than up to the task finishing the contest with six saves and a third shutout for the season.
Neither team would find the back of the net in the first half ending the period as scoreless as they started.
It was the Thunder's freshman phenom Teresa Ashbrook (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) who broke the stalemate. She received a pass from classmate Mia Augustino (Niagara Falls, N.Y. / Lancaster) and converted it for her eighth goal of the season. Ashbrook has scored in all six of the teams contests so far. The goal came in the 61st minute of the contest.
The team doubled their lead under two minutes later, this time freshman Bella Mabry (Oregon, Ohio / Clay) came up with the goal. The unassisted tally is her second of the season.
The Thunder would weather the rest of the contest holding Penn State Behrend scoreless and picking up a 2-0 victory to finish off the weekend with a pair of victories. The team improves to 5-0-1 overall.
Trine will take the pitch again on Wednesday, Sept. 15 when they travel to face Denison University for a 5 p.m. contest.
