PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The Hilbert College men's volleyball team got back on the winning track this evening and closed the first night of competition at the Golden Flyer Invitational with a repeat victory to improve to 4-2 overall.
Hilbert opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Nazareth but rebounded in a 3-1 win over D'Youville College for the second time this week.
Nazareth (8-1) finished the match with 36 kills, only nine hitting errors (.365), 13 service aces and controlled the net defensively with 10 blocks. The Golden Flyers rotated 16 players in and out of the three-set match.
The Hawks collected 18 kills and 20 digs in the 25-16, 25-9 and 25-18 game.
Michael Podgorny and
Korey Schwab led with six and five kills respectively. Those two and
James Moscato (one kill) were the only Hawks to finish with positive hitting percentages.
Adam Heftka had all of Hilbert's 17 assists and
Trevor Gabamonte led with seven digs.
In the nightcap, Hilbert out-lasted D'Youville in the
extendedsecond set (32-30) after their 25-19 opening game victory. The Spartans rallied back and claimed the third set, 25-15, but that was all the Red and White would get as the Hawks reached match-point first (25-16) in the fourth.
The first set was a close game until Hilbert broke-open an 11-11 score with back-to-back kills. The Hawks thanked the Spartans for the next five points and held a 17-11 lead. D'Youville cut it to 2 points (20-18) but then
Korey Schwab,
Tyler Sieczkarek and
Tanner Makowski put it away with three kills.
D'Youville took an early lead in the second set and kept command on the score board until Hilbert grabbed their first mid-match lead (19-18). With a 24-22 score, Hilbert had the serve for the win, but a Spartan block forced extra play. Neither team got on a roll, until D'Youville built a 30-29 lead.
Korey Schwab and
Tyler Sieczkarek sent
Adam Heftka's passes straight down on the opposite side of the net for a 31-30 lead and
Brett Kane ended the game with another block.
D'Youville found their rhythm in the third set just as Hilbert struggled with hitting. The Spartans jumped to a 20-14 lead and stretched it to a 10-point win.
Hilbert strung together several points in a row at different times during the final set. With the score 20-15 in favor of the Hawks, Podgorny and Makowski posted kills beforeHeftka served an ace for a 24-15 lead. Makowski ended the match with his fifth kill in four sets.
Heftka added 37 more assists to his career total and added five kills (.625) as well as three solo blocks and six digs.
Sieczkarek posted 12 kills and eight digs (three block assists) while
Korey Schwab collected eight kills and six digs. Schwab earned his 78th career service ace and is only seven away from becoming the program's All Time Leader.
Michael Podgorny added nine kills and six digs as
Brett Kane and
Ryan Schwab added nine and four digs respectively.
Hilbert returns to Rochester Saturday for an 11 am match against Elmira and then will battle Medaille at 1pm. Both games will have live in-game
stats and the nightcap game will be shown via live stream
video.
