Balanced Scoring Lifts Women's Basketball To Victory

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team captured an 84-64 non-conference victory at Alfred University (2-3) tonight and improved to 2-3 overall.

Even with a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday, Melissa Graham's Hawks (2-3) set a few new season highs after scoring 84 points thanks to 22 assists and 42 points in the paint.

Hilbert took an early 18-11 lead after the first quarter and extended their lead to 44-28 by intermission.  Both Kelsi Ebert and Shannon Rogers spent quality time at the foul line in the first half as each netted six made free throws.

Ebert led all scorers with 14 points, hitting 2-of-3 shots beyond the arc.  Katelyn Proy was perfect from the floor sinking all five shots in the paint which helped the Hawks early in the game.  Samantha Heiler knocked down both her long range jumpers to chip in 8 points by the break.

The Hawks stretched their lead to 20 points several times in the third quarter off a combination of unselfish passing and timely shooting.  Emily Speidel closed the third quarter going on an 8-0 run.  She connected on a pair of three-point shots and a layup to set up a 70-47 scored heading into the final session.

Hilbert held onto a 20-point lead until the final three minutes in the game.  Alfred found points at the charity stripe trimming the difference late.

The Royal and White controlled the glass, out rebounding the Saxons 49-34 while they picked-up 16 offensive rebounds.

Kelsi Ebert earned team-high honors in points, 20 (8 of 9 at the foul line), and steals, 4.  Shannon Rogers earned her third double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Both Katelyn Proy and Emily Speidel added 14 points.  Proy, who went 7 for 10 from floor, pulled in six rebounds.  Speidel had a hot hand, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor (3 for 5 beyond the arc).

Samantha Heiler connected for 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished for 4 assists producing an all-around game from the point.

Hilbert returns to action Wednesday, November 30 when they host Pitt-Bradford in AMCC action at 6pm.
