Women’s Tennis Drops Pair of Matches in Saturday Road Trip

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team embarked on its first road trip of the season on Saturday, when the Lions traveled to western New York to compete in a doubleheader of matches at Village Glen Tennis Club.

Penn State Altoona (0-3, 0-1 AMCC) faced its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent this season in its first match of the day, falling 7-2 to conference foe Medaille College. The Lions finished the day against former AMCC foe and current Division II program D'Youville College, which handed Penn State Altoona a 5-2 defeat.

Match One: Medaille 7, Penn State Altoona 2

Penn State Altoona competed in its first AMCC match of the season, taking on Medaille (2-3, 2-1 AMCC). The Mavericks recorded a five-point win by taking two out of three doubles matches and five out of six singles matches.

The Lions got a point from their No. 3 doubles team of Stephanie Swain (Yadkin County, NC/Forbush)/Jenna Bartlett (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis), who earned an 8-7 (7-3) victory for their first win together in doubles this season.

Bartlett provided Penn State Altoona's second point in her No. 6 singles match, during which she came out on top of a back-and-forth match, winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 for her second singles victory of the fall.

Match Two: D'Youville 5, Penn State Altoona 2

The Lions wrapped up the day by taking on D'Youville (3-1). The Saints won all three doubles matches to earn the first point, as doubles play is scored as one decision in Division II tennis. D'Youville then prevailed in one through four singles matches to tack four more points on to its total.

Swain recorded her first singles win of the season for Penn State Altoona with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory in the No. 5 match. Bartlett improved to 2-0 on the day and 3-0 this season by winning 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis returns to Altoona for its next match, when the Lions will host non-conference opponent Juniata College on Wednesday, September 22 at 4:00 p.m. That match is scheduled to be played outdoors on campus at the Adler Tennis Courts, weather permitting.
