Hunter Martineau Nets 30 Points In Loss To La Roche On Senior Day

Hamburg, N.Y. – Seniors Hunter Martineau and Masia Phillips combined for 49 points, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell in a hard fought game to top seeded La Roche by a final of 88-86.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Warren Richardson opened up the scoring for the Hawks with a thunderous slam off of a Hunter Martineau feed.
  • After trading baskets back and forth, Tyler Frederick hit from three to put the Redhawks up 9-6 with 17:01 remaining in the half.
  • Hilbert tied it up soon after with a Masia Phillips put back. Tyler Frederick responded immediately after with another three-pointer, but Ryan Hogan came right back with a three of his own to keep things knotted at 12 each.
  • La Roche regained the lead at 15-12 before Hunter Martineau found Jon Evans on a fast break for a monster slam to get Hilbert within a point of tying it up. Evans followed that with another dunk two possessions later to keep the Hawks within a point again.
  • Warren Richardson got back involved in the scoring after Evans' dunks with a put back, which Kyreese followed with a jumper to put the Hawks up 20-17 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
  • Hilbert held a slim lead over the next five minutes of play when Hunter Martineau hit a fast break layup with five minutes to go in the half to give the Hawks a four point lead, their largest of the opening half.
  • Both teams played neck and neck over the final five minutes, resulting in a 36-33 Hilbert lead at the break.
  • La Roche's Tyler Frederick opened the second half scoring with a three-point play off a put back to immediately tie things up at 36-36.
  • From there, both teams traded blows before Masia Phillips hit from three and Alex Karamanos followed with a pair of free throws to cap off a 7-0 Hilbert run to give the Hawks a 53-46 lead, their largest of the game with just over 14 minutes remaining.
  • La Roche began to heat up soon after, hitting a trio of threes and a layup to tie up the score at 57-57 with 11:08 to go.
  • The Redhawks regained the lead at 60-59 after a Joe Pipilo three-point basket, before both teams began trading baskets yet again.
  • After a Hunter Martineau layup tied it at 63, the Redhawks continued their hot shooting, knocking down three-pointers and free throws to take a 73-65 lead with 6:43 left in the game.
  • Hilbert came roaring back as Hunter Martineau scored eight straight Hawks points to tie it up at 80-80 with 3:07 remaining.
  • With the score tied at 86-86, Darrell Barron hit a big go-ahead jumper to put La Roche on top 88-86 and they didn't look back from there, as they left with an 88-86 win over the host Hawks.
  • Hilbert's Hunter Martineau finished with a team-high 30 points and eight assists, while Jon Evans led the Hawks with nine boards.
  • La Roche's Tyler Frederick finished with a team-high 19 points, while Kennedy Smith and Austin Hannes tied for the team-lead in both assists (4) and rebounds (6).
GAME NOTES
  • Hilbert held a 28-15 advantage on the glass in the first half, including a 12-2 advantage in offensive rebounds to outscore La Roche 26-18 in the paint and 11-1 in second chance points, which resulted in a three-point lead at the half for the Hawks.
  • The Hawks finished with a 44-30 advantage in rebounds, while outscoring the Redhawks in point in the paint (58-34), second chance points (21-11) and fast break points (22-10).
  • The Redhawks used a balanced attack with five players finishing in double figures.
  • There were six lead changes and the score was tied 16 different times throughout the course of the game.
  • Hilbert finished the game shooting 32 of 71 (45.1%) from the floor, including 3 of 18 (16.7%) from 3-point range, while going 19 of 23 (82.6%) from the free throw line.   
  • La Roche shot 33 of 62 (53.2%) from the floor, including 10 of 22 from the 3-point line (45.5%), while going 12 of 18 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.
