Women’s Volleyball Loses Two in Gettysburg Classic Finale

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team wrapped up its weekend in the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic with a pair of heartbreaking losses on Saturday, when the Lions came out on the losing end of a pair of 3-2 decisions against Bridgewater College and Gallaudet University.

Penn State Altoona (0-4) held a 2-0 over Bridgewater in its first match of the day, only to see it slip away when the Eagles rallied for three straight set wins. In the Lions' second match of the day, the team overcame an early deficit to Gallaudet but ultimately lost in five sets.

Senior setter Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for her collegiate career, becoming the seventh player in Penn State Altoona women's volleyball program history to achieve the milestone.

Match One: Bridgewater 3, Penn State Altoona 2

Penn State Altoona started the day with a tough, five-set loss to Bridgewater (2-2). The Lions worked their way out to a 2-0 lead in the match, following hard-fought 28-26 and 26-24 victories in the first two sets. But Bridgewater rallied to tie the match with 25-20 and 25-9 wins in the next two sets, then prevailed 15-13 in the fifth to claim victory.

Moran totaled a match-high 41 assists and added five digs and two service aces. Erin Lutz (State College, PA/State College) also posted a match-high statistics by leading all players with 28 digs while contributing three assists and two aces.

Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) finished with a team-leading 16.5 points, recording 15 kills, one ace, and a block assist while also recording 15 digs. Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) had 13 kills and 12 digs, and Morgan Fussell (Blairsville, GA/Union County) scored 10 kills.

Match Two: Gallaudet 3, Penn State Altoona 2

The Lions followed their first loss of the day with another five-set heartbreaker, this time falling to Gallaudet (1-3). After dropping the opening set 25-14, Penn State Altoona pulled together to win the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23. But the Bison tied the match with a 25-11 victory in the fourth set, then edged out Penn State Altoona 15-12 in the fifth set to win the match.

Barnhart had a team-best nine points on seven kills, one ace, and one solo block while also compiling nine digs. Mock recorded 7.5 points on seven kills and a block assist, and she also had seven digs. Fussell posted seven points on five kills, two block assists, and one solo block, and Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) had six points on five kills and a pair of block assists.

Moran totaled 24 assists to lead the team in that category. Lutz finished with a team-best 10 digs while serving up five aces.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's volleyball will return to Ivyside to host its first home match of the season, as the Lions will take on non-conference opponent Geneva College on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Adler Arena.
