Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hilbert Beats Bradford, 90-73, For AMCC Win

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team opened the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of their schedule with a 9-0 run at Pitt-Bradford and continued to build from there en route to a lopsided, 90-73 early conference victory.

Jalen Smith led thirteen different Hawks in scoring and rebounding as Hilbert jumped to 1-0 in the AMCC standings and improved to 3-2 overall while they dropped the Panthers to 1-3 and 0-1 in the league.

"I'm pleased with our preparation going into the first conference game of the season," noted coach Rob deGrandpre.  "We got a variety of contributions tonight and this is what competing as a team is all about.  We need everyone daily.  Tonight we go that."

Hilbert exploded out of the gate with 9-0 lead just three minutes into the game.  Nicholas Parucki's seven-point swing stretched the Hawks to their first double figure lead, 18-7 at 11:51.  Hilbert extended their shooting range, hitting five more 3-point shots by intermission and took a 51-30 lead to the locker room.

Tyler Aquilina's three consecutive 3-point shots were book-ended by Smith's and Parucki's hits while Jonathan Jackson, Masia Phillips and Joseph Braniecki went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe as the half came to a close.

Hilbert shot 51.4% from the floor, 53.8% from beyond the arc (7-of-13) and they dominated the glass with a 32-13 edge after 20 minutes of action.

Bradford sliced their deficit to 19 points just 11 seconds into the second half, but the Hawks maintained their 20 point lead the rest of the way and cleared the bench early giving the less experienced players their first taste of an AMCC road win in 2017.

Smith and Hunter Martineau combined for 13 of Hilbert's 17 points at the start of the second session while rookies Charles Lamar and Tyler Aquilina's six-point run game Hilbert their largest lead in the game 74-44 at 10:24.

The Hawks shooting percentages cooled in the second period, but they maintained control of the glass (54-35) while earning a 23-1 advantage in second-chance points.  All fifteen Hilbert players filled the stat-sheet tonight.

Jalen Smith earned game-high honors with 23 points and seven rebounds.  Hunter Martineau added nine more assists to his impressive career totals while pulling down four rebounds and scoring eight points.

Rookie Tyler Aquilina posted his first double digit scoring performance with 14 points behind 3-of-4 from deep and 5-of-6 at the foul line while garnering five rebounds.  Big-men Joseph Braniecki and Nicholas Parucki (two 3-pointers) earned matching 12 points and combined for nine rebounds.

Hilbert returns to action this weekend when they host Penn State Altoona December 2 at 1pm in another AMCC double header with the women's teams to follow.
