Late-Game Overtime Foul Shots Drop Hawks at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team fell in a 92-88 non-conference overtime loss at Alfred University tonight.

Jalen Smith led the Hawks with 29 points, one less than Alfred's Julian Reinhart who claimed the victory at the foul line for the Saxons.

Derrek Carman was perfect at the foul line hitting all eight attempts to add 18 points picking up his first double-double with 11 rebounds.

Hunter Martineau chipped in 15 points and dished nine assists in 44 minutes of action.

The Hawks built an early lead and never relinquished it.  Hilbert's big men scored the game's first nine points before the Saxons responded at 17:27.

Derrek Carman started the roll, David Arlaud hit back-to back shots before Nicholas Parucki struck from downtown.

Two possessions later, Hilbert built a double-digit lead but Alfred still hung around the rest of the way.

Alfred cut the difference to two points on two different trips, yet the Royal and White hit both their jumpers and sank their free throws to close out the half with a 43-40 lead.

Jalen Smith had already collected 15 points in 19 minutes while Hunter Martineau was credited with four assists by the break.

Hilbert jumped back up with another 11-point lead thanks to five quick Smith points and Carman consecutive free throws, but at 11:35 Alfred took their first lead in the game, 58-57, off a driving layup.

Neither team was sharp on offense with empty possessions for two minutes of play.  Martineau's full court driving score brought Hilbert within one, 64-63, and forced a timeout.

Both teams switched up their defense forcing each other out of offensive rhythm.  The game stayed close, with no more than a two-possession lead held by either team for the next eight minutes.

Masia Phillips' layup at 3:52 gave Hilbert a four point lead and things looked promising when Carman sank another pair of freebies at 3:11 lifting the Hawks to a 79-71 lead.

Smith was called with a push-off foul and left the game with 29 points and four steals with just over two minutes left in regulation with Hilbert up, 79-76.

Alfred went on an 8-0 run to force overtime as Hilbert struggled through turnovers and fouls down the stretch.

After about a minute of action in overtime, Martineau gave Hilbert a short-lived lead with a jumper in the paint at 3:51.  Fifteen-seconds later, Alfred scored in the paint only to have Carmen respond in kind at 3:14.

The Saxons knotted the game at 83 from the foul line just before Kirkland Ottey lifted the Hawks by three with a shot from down town followed by a Parucki layup at 1:46 (88-83).

Alfred knocked down a three-point shot then hit a pair of foul shots forcing that final tie of the game at 88-88.  The Hawks were called for a foul on an attempted three-point shot and then a technical which developed into five consecutive free throws, all with 0.4 seconds left on the clock.  Alfred went 4 for 5 to seal the 92-88 win.

Four Hilbert players finished the game watching from the bench as Alfred lost two players to excessive fouls with three other players holding-on with four fouls each. A total of 65 fouls were called between both teams.

Hilbert went 28-39 from the foul line and Alfred sank 25 of 38 attempts.  The Hawks finished the game shooting 48% from the floor, but only 21% beyond the arc.

Alfred collected 17 offensive rebounds pulling down eight more than Hilbert and outscored the Hawks 37-16 off the bench.

Hilbert (3-2) returns to action this week when they host Pitt-Bradford Wednesday, November 30 in AMCC action.
