Panthers Edge Mounties

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team picked up a big win on Wednesday as they returned to AMCC play with a 75-68 win over Mount Aloysius.

  • The Panthers saw the visitors jump out to a quick 5-0 lead, but were able to get an immediate response as Alex Rodriguez hit corner threes on back-to-back possessions to put the Panthers ahead. They pushed their lead to 5 points with two baskets inside from Dylan Meyer and a pair of Nathan Schneider free throws. After a Schneider putback saw the Panthers go up 14-9, the Mounties scored 6 straight to retake the lead.
  • A Mount Aloysius free throw set the score at 24-21 Pitt-Bradford with just over 5 minutes to go in the half, when the Panthers quickly scored 7 straight points to open up a double-digit lead. Caden Beldin started the rally by making a driving layup and then blocked a shot on the next possession to send Isaiah Archie away on the fast break. After another defensive stop, Alex Rodriguez hit another three to give the Panthers a 31-21 lead. The Mounties chipped away at the lead to get it down to 5 points with under a minute in the half but Gus Napoleon made a jump shot and Greg Archie hit a floater at the buzzer to send the game to halftime with the Panthers leading 38-29.
  • Despite a slow start to the second half, the Panthers were able to increase their defensive intensity and force two consecutive turnovers. They took advantage of the turnovers by making two fast-break buckets to extend the advantage to 13. The Panthers kept the MMounties off the scoreboard for a 4-minute stretch that culminated in a fourth Rodriguez three to give the Panthers their largest lead of the contest at 16 points.
  • The Mounties answered with a strong defensive showing over the net four minutes that saw them quickly cut the Panther lead to 4 points. Isaiah Archie slowed the Mountie charge with two three-pointers from the wing. The Archie threes put the momentum back with the Panthers as they were able to outscore the Mounties 9 to 2 over the next 3:33 to restore their 15 point lead. Archie scored 7 points in the rally.
  • Following an Archie pull-up jumper with 4:16 to go Mount Aloysius made one final push, taking advantage of a three-minute scoreless streak from the Panthers to get the lead down to four points with 39 seconds to go. The Panthers made 5 of 8 from the line down the stretch to put the game away.

Isaiah Archie paced Pitt-Bradford with 33 points on 11-19 from the field and 9-12 from the line. He also had 4 rebounds and 5 steals. He made a particular impact on the second half, as he scored 24 of the Panthers' 37 points in the period. Alex Rodriguez was the only other Panther to finish in double figures, as he scored 12 points. Nathan Schneider had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Panthers.

The win moves the Panthers to 7-6 on the season with a 2-2 record in AMCC play. They will be back in action on Saturday as they will host Penn State-Behrend at 4:00 p.m.
