FREDONIA, N.Y. – Returning the live action outside the Hafner Recreation Center or the team's off-site practice facility for the first time in 17 days, the Hilbert College baseball team struggled to execute at the plate and fell to Fredonia State 17-1 this afternoon.
Bradley Perrin knocked in the Hawks' solo run in the top of the 8th inning but that one run was not enough to overcome the deficit the visitors found themselves in.
Fredonia found four runs in the bottom of the first, second and fourth innings while adding three and two runs in the sixth and seventh to build their 17-0 lead.
Paul Wujek singled in the top of the eighth to start the rally. After
Ryan Bonafede was walked,
Tyler Sulski and
Tyler Shaw's at bats put the Hawks in a two-out situation.
Perrin's single gave Wujek enough time to sprint home, but the throw to second base beat Perrin who tried to stretch his base running.
Hilbert turned one double play defensively and threw one runner out trying to steal second base.
The Hawks connected for only six hits on the day and left nine runners on base.
Matt Goraj took the loss going two innings with one strike-out while giving up six hits and five earned runs.
Justin Crawley covered four innings and facing twice as many batters, he struck out one, walked one and gave up 12 hits.
Winfred Nelson finished the non-conference game with two hits and two runs.
Hilbert returns to the diamond tomorrow when they travel to Pitt-Bradford for their first AMCC game of the 2015 season.
