Hilbert Fights La Roche to a 74-60 Loss
Box Score Hamburg, N.Y. - The Hilbert College women's basketball team struggled in the opening minutes against La Roche College, the first place team in the AMCC. They battled their way back into the game but could not surmount their early deficit and fell 74-60.
Shannon Rogers controlled the comeback, scoring 19 of her 22 points in the second half to go along with a game-high 23 rebounds.
Emily Speidel's three-pointer ended the Red Hawks 5-0 run to begin the game. Costly turnovers by the Hawks turned into points for Red Hawks, who extended their lead to 20 (26-6) with 7:18 left in the first half. A layup by
Wyann Jackson capped off a 15-2 run in favor of Hilbert, making it a seven-point game. La Roche responded quickly to momentum shift and bounced back to a 35-21 lead. Using a
Kelsi Ebert free throw, the Hawks were able to cut the game to ten before the break, as the half ended 35-25 in the Red Hawks favor.
After a slow first half, which saw 26 fouls called between the two teams, the second half had more energy and flow. The teams traded buckets back-and-forth to begin the half but another Jackson lay-up cut the lead to seven (40-33). Every time Hilbert cut into the lead La Roche had an answer, as they went on a 10-3 run, which included back-to-back threes by Sabrina McLin, to go up by 14.
La Roche led by as many as 15, but Hilbert continued to stick around, they just could not make a significant cut into the lead. The Hawks had chances, especially from the free throw line but they could not capitalize. The Hawks ultimately fell 74-60.
Along with her strong scoring and rebounding, Rogers also posted a team-high three assists.
Wyann Jackson contributed fourteen points on five-of-eight shooting from the floor (3-4 from free throw line), along with five boards.
Kelsi Ebert dropped eleven points and snagged two steals in the loss.
Four Red Hawks recorded double-digit scoring and they were led by Sabrina McLin's game-high 23 points, including four timely threes. Shataya White added 19 points and seven caroms for La Roche
La Roche generated 36 points off Hawk turnovers and had 12 points on fast breaks, compared to Hilbert's 12 and 0, respectively. Hilbert also struggled as a team from the free throw line, shooting a mere 48.6% (18-37).
The Hawks (2-17) host SUNY Canton tomorrow in the Hafner Recreation Center at 2pm.
