Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Falls In Buffalo Cup Action

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's volleyball team honored Stephanie Cartonia, the program's solo senior, prior to their Buffalo Cup contest against D'Youville College tonight.

The Outside Hitter appeared in her final volleyball match in the Hafner Recreation Center this evening and was celebrated before the first volley.

Hilbert dropped an exciting 3-set Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match to their cross-town rivals from the lower west side of Buffalo.  The Hawks put up a good fight and made the Spartans play every ball.

In the first set, Hilbert took an early lead (4-1) before D'Youville responded at the net.  The Spartans spotted a 25-13 win behind strong hitting (12 kills/1 error).

The Hawks turned the table in the second set.  Hilbert led the entire game until D'Youville knotted the game at 23-23 and forced a Hilbert timeout.

Early on in the game, Hilbert's defense put the visitors out of sync at the net.  Ashley Repine earned three back-to-back-to-back blocks, first a solo then two block assists with Maegann Mein and Sierra Seader and that effort stretched the Hawks lead to four points (16-12).

But with a 23-19 lead, the Spartans battled back.  They earned consecutive service aces and then a pair of points within the floor play to force a Hilbert timeout.

Long rallies followed that break and the red and white rallied for the 27-25 win.  Unlike the first set, D'Youville posted only 14 kills but had 15 hitting errors.  The Hawks scored four kills and four blocks knocking on the door to steal the win.

D'Youville regrouped and came out ready to attack again at the net in the final set.  They collected a quick lead and played to a 25-14 win.

For the match, Hilbert finished with nine kills and 100 attempts.  The Spartans took 38 kills in 125 attempts for the win.

Maegann Mein led Hilbert with four kills while Torianna LeWand was all over the place earning six assists, two kills, two service aces and led with 13 digs.

Sierra McLaughlin posted double digit digs (11) as Sara Trzepkowski reached for nine digs and a pair of service aces.

Ashley Repine finished with two solo blocks and three kills (0 errors/12 attempts)

Hilbert (1-21, 0-8) closes out the AMCC portion of their 2017 schedule with a quick trip to Penn State Altoona this weekend.
