Hawks Softball Splits and Ties All Time Win Record

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Gabriella Bongiorno blasted her first home run at Hilbert and helped lift the Hawks to a 2-1 opening victory over Pitt-Greensburg this morning in softball. But the Bobcats responded with a bases-clearing home run in the night cap to claim a 7-1 victory, splitting the series in Hamburg.

Prior to the start of the game, the Hawks honored their three seniors who all played a vital role in the team's success today and this season.

GAME 1

The first game was a pitching duel between the #1 ranked AMCC pitcher, Jaimie Schleicher and senior Victoria Dzaak

Both teams played a scoreless 5 inning game with only one Greensburg hit earned in the first inning.  Senior  Brittany Cooley was the only other player on the diamond in that time frame to earn a hit, yet, she got to first base twice.

In the top of the sixth, Greensburg homered, breaking the scoreless game.  Then Bongiorno, the first batter in the bottom of the sixth, poked her first home run over the fence exactly where Greensburg had just two batters ago.  Nateal Papasergi lifted Hilbert with an RBI single which scored Morgan McNeill from second base for the winning run.

Dzaak finished her 11th complete game with five strike outs, one earned run and two hits.

GAME 2

Greensburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and added five more runs in the top of the third before Hilbert scored their solo run in the bottom half.  Neither team crossed home after that setting the final score, 7-1.

Greensburg's big 5-run inning was fueled by a bases-loaded homer in the third inning.

Papasergi scored Hilbert's only run in the bottom of the third off a passed ball.

Morgan Grosch went 2-for-3 and Brittany Cooley went 2-for-4 as they both posted doubles in the game.

Rachel Allen went two innings with three hits and one earned run along with one strike out.  Dzaak closed the game with four more strike outs and five earned runs.

With the win today, the Hawks tied the program's single season Win record posting 12 victories in 2017.  Victoria Dzaak closed her four-year career as the #1 pitcher in: Most games finished and Most Strikeouts looking as well as setting Single Season Records in 2017: Most Strikeouts looking.
