Men's Basketball Opens Season With Major Comeback Win

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Hilbert men's basketball scored a major come from behind victory this evening as they came back from a 17-point deficit at the intermission to defeat Grove City by a final of 70-68.   
 
THE BASICS
  • Final Score: Hilbert 70 Grove City 68

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wolverines set the tone early as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first 3 minutes of play, scoring on each of their first 4 possessions.  
  • The Hawks responded over the next 3 and a half minutes of action as freshman Jon Evans scored a pair of buckets in the paint to help the Hawks to a 7-2 run to close the gap to 10-7.
  • Grove City took over the remainder of the half outscoring the Hawks 31-17 over the final 13:37 of play to build a 41-24 lead at the intermission.
  • Hilbert made the necessary adjustments during the intermission and came out in the second half playing stout defense, while playing with more efficiency on the offensive end. The royal and white held Grove City to just 11 points over the first 11:23 of the second half, while pouring in 24 points of their own to cut the deficit to 4 (52-48) with 8:23 to go.
  • Over the final 8 plus minutes of action Hilbert continued to keep pace with the host Wolverines, and with 14 seconds to go, junior Ryan Hogan drilled a 3-pointer to take the lead and ultimately lift the Hawks to the victory.
  • Senior guards Masia Phillips and Hunter Martineau led the Hawks offensively with 17 and 14 points respectively. Freshman Jon Evans had a big night underneath the basket earning a team-high in rebounds (9) and blocked shots (2). Martineau also added a team-high six assists as well.
  • Grove City had a pair of players post double figure points, led by Nate Peters who was credited with 25 points (10-15 from field, while also leading the team with 6 rebounds.
GAME NOTES
  • The trio of Hawks seniors led the way offensively, accounting for 41 of the team's 70 points (58.6%).  
  • Hilbert hit 24 of 65 field goal attempts (36.9%), while connecting on 18 of 28 shots from the foul line (64.3%).
  • Grove City finished the game hitting 45.8% from the floor, but were held to just a pair of 3-point baskets. The Wolverines went 12 of 17 (70.6%) from the free throw line.  
  • Both teams grabbed 42 rebounds, but the Hawks won the turnover battle, committing only 11 turnovers to the Wolverines 17.

The Hawks are back in action this weekend as they host Chatham in the first round of the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tourney at 8pm on Friday, November 15th.
