Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A Great Second-Half Effort Gives Hilbert the Win

HAMBURG, N.Y.Derrek Carman earned his second career double-double to lead the Hilbert College men's basketball team to an 84-75 exciting victory over Pitt-Bradford tonight.

Hilbert (4-2, 1-0) trailed by three points at the break but hit the floor running in the second half to outscore the Panthers (2-2, 0-1) for their first AMCC win of the season.

Evan Greening, the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year selection, led all scorers with 30 points and 13 rebounds doing most of his damage in the paint.

Bradford jumped ahead early in the game and forced a Hilbert timeout as the Hawks trailed 16-8.  Both team's traded hoops, with neither stretching or cutting the difference dramatically, until Greening scored a traditional 3-point play to lift Bradford by 11 points.

With just over 2 minutes left in the half, Hilbert went on a 8-0 to cut the difference to 41-38 by intermission.

Hilbert shot 45.7% from the floor, were held scoreless beyond the arc and earned 18 rebounds.  Bradford converted 42.1% of the attempts, hit only 2 of their 10 long distance bombs but out rebounded the Hawks, earning 11 offensive boards for 27 total.

Hilbert stepped on the floor with a different attitude the second half.  They switched up their defensive coverage and forced the Panthers into jump shots rather than shots inside the lane.  Hilbert twice built a nine-point lead, but Bradford fought back.

Greening hit back-to-back 3-point shots from the top swinging the score back to Bradford's favor 55-54 with 13 minutes to go.  Kirkland Ottey scored inside the lane and Jalen Smith connected on the Hawks' only long ball of the night to give Hilbert a lead that they never relinquished.

Kirkland Ottey gave Hilbert a 9-point lead on three different occasions in the game's final minutes to secure the AMCC victory.

Derrek Carman shot 9-for-15 from the floor and grabbed 12 rebounds, finishing with only one foul against his toughest opponent yet this year.

Five other Hawks posted double-digit scoring and Hilbert finally out-rebounded the Panthers, 44-41 by the final horn.

Hunter Martineau and Ottey each scored 14 points with Ottey working hard on defense grabbing four steals.  Martineau was a crafty passer dishing the ball for five assists.

Nicholas Parucki added 12 points and two blocks while Jalen Smith and David Arlaud chipped in 11 points each.  Arlaud and Ottey finished with three assists each and Smith was credited with three steals.

Hilbert travels this weekend for their second AMCC game of the season.  They will face Penn State Altoona December 3.  The Lions are 2-3 on the season after they dismantled last year's AMCC champions, Pitt-Greensburg tonight (101-86).
