Lions Conquer Spartans 98-85

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona men's basketball earned its fourth road win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College 98-85 in the College Center Gym.

The Lions (11-5, 7-5 AMCC) used a steady dose of offense to earn the 13-point victory, shooting 53.6 percent from the field while connecting on 11-for-22 three-point attempts. Six different Penn State Altoona players finished with double-digit scoring totals.

"Very excited to come up to Buffalo for the last regular season trip and get the 'W,'" said Penn State Altoona head coach David McGreal. "You've got to really believe that the seniors didn't want to have their last regular season trip here end in a loss, because all of them played great."

Austin Krise (Allport, PA/West Branch) led the way for Penn State Altoona, putting up a career-high 23 points while adding a team-high four steals. Krise went 9-for-10 from the field, including hitting all five of his attempts from beyond the arc.

"Austin has been playing very well lately," said McGreal. "He capped it today with his best performance yet."

Andruw Harman (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) contributed 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one block off the bench. Cameron Gardner-Nicholson (Philadelphia, PA/Boys' Latin Charter) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds while scoring 13 points to record his seventh double-double of the season, and he also blocked a pair of shots.

Jack Kusters (Quakertown, PA/Lansdale Catholic) scored 18 points, grabbed five boards, and distributed a team-high five assists. Robbie Hicks (Rockledge, FL/Rockledge) and Trey Butterworth (Clarence, PA/Bald Eagle) each finished with 10 points, with Hicks recording five rebounds and a block and Butterworth chipping in a pair of assists.

Clevon Scott (Raeford, NC/Hoke County) blocked a team-high three shots, and he also corralled six rebounds.

"Trey had his best scoring game of the year, and big Cam made some huge plays down the stretch and finished with another double-double," McGreal stated. "Druw basically ended the game with big plays, free throws, and a huge poster dunk that put an exclamation point on the game."

D'Youville (4-14, 3-10 AMCC) was led in scoring by Will Saunders, who finished with 19 points. Darrius Hartzog scored 16 points and recorded seven rebounds and four steals, while Juan Miguel Rosales added 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Spartans.

Trailing early in the first half, Penn State Altoona worked its way into an 11-7 lead at the 15:39 mark following Kusters' layup and Krise's three-pointer. After D'Youville took a brief lead midway through the half, Kusters and Butterworth hit back-to-back treys to give the Lions a 22-19 lead by 7:58. Two more Butterworth three-pointers increased his team's lead to 28-23 by 6:18, and a Krise three-pointer and Kusters layup put the Lions ahead by 10 points, 33-23, less than a minute later.

Krise connected on two more three-pointers during the remainder of the period, helping Penn State Altoona to a 47-40 halftime lead.

Layups from Hicks on consecutive possessions helped the Lions grow their lead to eight points, 55-47, just over two minutes into the second half. Kusters' three-pointer at 16:04 and Gardner-Nicholson's basket at 15:27 brought Penn State Altoona's lead back into double digits, 60-49.

Alex McClellan (York, PA/West York) made a three-pointer at 13:26 to keep Penn State Altoona up by 10, 65-55, and Krise's layup at 11:24 and three-pointer at 10:45 continued his team's 10-point advantage, 77-67.

Although D'Youville did not let the game get out of hand, Penn State Altoona was able to consistently answer the Spartans' scoring with points of its own. Harman's dunk with 1:25 remaining gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 96-83, and Penn State Altoona eventually hit the road with a 13-point victory.

"D'Youville can flat out score, and luckily we were able to get a few more stops down the stretch, including a big steal by Austin," said McGreal. "Now, we've got to turn around and get ready for another tough road test, as we head to Ohio on Wednesday."

With the season sweep of D'Youville now clinched, Penn State Altoona will turn its attention toward another AMCC opponent, Franciscan University, for a road game on Wednesday, January 29 at 6:00 p.m.
