Baseball Swept in AMCC Tournament Series at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team was eliminated from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament on Sunday, when the Lions suffered a pair of losses to Alfred State College in a first-round, best-of-three series at Pioneer Field.

Alfred State (20-20), the number three seed in the AMCC Tournament field, rallied for a 6-4 victory in game one. The Pioneers won the series and knocked sixth seed Penn State Altoona (17-21) out of the postseason by posting a 16-1 win in game two.

Alfred State will advance to the championship round of the AMCC Tournament this upcoming week, while Penn State Altoona's season comes to an end.

Game One: #3 Alfred State 6, #6 Penn State Altoona 4

The Lions dug out of an early 3-0 hole to grab a 4-3 lead in the fifth. But Alfred State scored three unanswered runs to reclaim the lead while holding Penn State Altoona scoreless the rest of the way.

The Lions were limited to just five hits as a team, with Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) having two of them with a 2-for-2 performance and two walks. Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) was 1-for-2 with a double, two runs batted in, two walks, and one run scored.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk, and Logan Margroum (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) also recorded an RBI.

Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) got the start on the mound and suffered the loss, pitching 4 1/3 innings and yielding four earned runs. Alex Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) tossed a scoreless 2/3 inning in relief with a pair of strikeouts, and Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) pitched one inning with two strikeouts and one run allowed.

Alfred State went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first on a Matteo Avallone three-run homer to left.

But Penn State Altoona began its rally in the top of the fourth, putting two runs on the board to cut Alfred State's lead to one. Hillard reached on a one-out single, then moved to second on a throwing error. Chamberlain followed that with an RBI double to center, and Margroum came next with an RBI single to center that trimmed the Lions' deficit to 3-2.

The Lions completed their comeback in the top of the fifth, scoring two more runs to work their way into the lead. Alex Hlivia (State College, PA/State College) started the frame by reaching on an error, and he later scored on Carey's sacrifice fly to right that tied the game at 3-3. Two batters later, with the bases full and two outs, Chamberlain drew a walk to score Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and put Penn State Altoona up 4-3.

But Alfred State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back on top. Avallone's bases-loaded walk drove in the tying run for the Pioneers, and the home team went up 5-4 when Jack Curabba scored on a two-out Lions error.

Alfred State increased its advantage to 6-4 in the sixth, when Owen Lansing scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers held their lead through the seventh, dealing Penn State Altoona a game one loss.

Game Two: #3 Alfred State 16, #6 Penn State Altoona 1

Alfred State punched its ticket to the next round of the AMCC Tournament with a commanding victory over Penn State Altoona in the second game of Sunday's series.

Chamberlain, McClain, and Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) each had a two-hit game for the Lions. Chamberlain was 2-for-4, McClain was 2-for-3 with a walk, and Alauzen went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hillard and Jake Yokobosky (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) also had one hit each for Penn State Altoona, and Margroum registered his team's lone RBI.

Sam Homan (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) started at pitcher and took the loss after tossing two innings, surrendering four runs, and recording three strikeouts. Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing six runs and striking out four batters. Austin Miller (Orbisonia, PA/Southern Huntingdon) tossed 1/3 inning out of the bullpen, and Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey) pitched one inning.

Alfred State scored the game's first five runs in a row, getting four across in the second inning and adding another in the third. Run-scoring singles by Lansing, Elijah Barinas, and Gavin Moore opened the scoring in the second, and an error allowed Moore to score to make it 4-0. Another Barinas RBI single extended the home team's lead to 5-0 in the third.

Penn State Altoona got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Singles by Alauzen and Chamberlain, along with a walk by Hillard, loaded the bases with no outs to start the inning for the Lions. Margroum drove in a run with his sacrifice fly to center, but Alfred State escaped the inning without allowing any further damage by turning a double play.

Alfred State got that run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Nick Serce solo homer to right. The Pioneers went on to break the game open by scoring six runs in the seventh, then adding four more in the eighth to boost their lead to 16-1.
