Women's Basketball Moves Into Tie For Lead After Knocking Off La Roche

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College moved into a two-way tie for 1st place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference after they earned a 66-56 victory over La Roche College in women's basketball action this afternoon.

The Hawks improved to 13-4 overall and, with an 8-2 AMCC record, share the lead with La Roche (8-2) who dropped to 9-7 overall.

Hilbert started both halves fast, posting 21 in the first quarter and 22 points in the third quarter, en route to a 22-point lead by the start of the final session.

The Hawks needed that cushion.

La Roche outworked the hosts in the fourth ten-minute session, outscoring Hilbert 22-10 thanks to 10 Hawk turnovers in the final frame.

Taylor Corts (three steals) finished with 16 points after leading both teams at the break with 12.  She knocked down four 3-pointers in the game, hitting all three in the opening half.

Ashley Repine, who had to battle foul trouble most of the second half, tossed in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Emily Gawlak matched Repine's scoring effort while leading the hosts with five assists in a full 40 minutes.  Gawlak hit a highlight jumper off a long inbounds pass catching and shooting it off the bounce before the end of the third quarter.

Katelyn Proy zapped six blocks and collected another double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  She and Repine pulled down nine of Hilbert's 12 offensive caroms.

Demi Battin added 11 points, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor while earning two steals.

The Hawks held a 41-34 advantage on the boards, hit 47.3% of their shots from the floor and went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.

La Roche forced Hilbert into 23 turnovers, five in the second quarter as the Redhawks made a run before the break and 10 in the final frame.

The Hawks return to action in two days when they travel to Penn State Behrend January 23rd (6pm).  Hilbert posted a 48-37 first-round victory in the fall semester.
