Efficient Panthers Sweep Mavericks at Home

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's volleyball team hit a combined .312 as they swept Medaille 3-0 in their AMCC match-up on Wednesday Night.

The Panthers jumped out early, dominating the opening set to the tune of a 25-9 victory. They faced a tight battle in the second set but used a late rally to open up the score and won't eh set 25-16. The Panthers fell behind in the final set, erasing multiple 4 point advantages to close the match with a 25-23 victory.

  • The Panthers jumped out to an immediate 5 point lead, as they scored the first 5 of the match with Olivia Reese on the serving line. Jordan Sitler and Emily Cleveland had kills in the run while Reese added an ace. Pitt-Bradford pushed the lead further, as two Stephanie Carson aces and a Cleveland kill forced a timeout with the Panthers up 11-3.
  • The Panthers dominated the remainder of the set, never allowing the visitors to score more than two consecutive points. Reese finished the set with another four-point rally that included two Cleveland kills and finished the set with another ace.
  • The second set saw the Panthers jump ahead early, but their guests respond and keep the score close throughout the first half of the period. With just a one-point lead at 9-8, the Panthers scored 5 of 7 to push their lead to 5. The Panthers maintained the advantage until they scored 5 straight to put the Mavericks on set point. After a side out, the Panthers closed the set on a Reese kill.
  • The final set was much different than its predecessors, as it was Medaille that jumped out to an early lead, opening up a 6 point advantage. With Eve Brink serving, the Panthers scored seven straight to jump ahead of the Mavericks but saw their guests respond and retake a 4-point lead. The Panthers were able to battle back late, however, chipping away at the deficit to tie the set at 21. 
  • With four points to go, Pitt-Bradford closed strong, as they took a 23-22 lead with a Tabitha Walker ace, and went to match point after a Reese kill. A block saw Medaille pull back to within one, but Jordan Sitler finished the match with a kill on the next point.

Emily Cleveland paced the Panthers with 16 kills. She converted at a .419 hitting percentage, committing only 3 errors on 31 attempts. Olivia Reese also reached double-digit kills, finishing with 10. Setter Tabitha Walker had another strong all-around performance. She had 33 assists, 8 digs, 2 kills, and a service ace. Kayla Maslowski led the defensive effort with 16 digs. Stephanie Carson finished the match with 4 service aces and also added 9 digs.

The Panthers are now 16-5 on the season with a 4-2 record in conference play. They remain in a tie for third place with Penn State-Altoona. The Panthers will be back in action for their final home game of the regular season on Saturday as they host Pitt-Greensburg on Senior Day. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
