BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team fell to Medaille College tonight (61-50) in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match-up. Two first year players led the Hawks as
Shannon Rogers posted her seventh double-double of the season and
Kelsi Ebert was one rebound shy of her first double-double. Hawks continues to search for their first win and Medaille moved to 500 in league play.
Medaille (6-10, 5-5) turned Hilbert's 17 first-half turn overs into 14 points while the Hawks reversed the tables earning 11 points to the Mavericks three in the second period.
Hilbert out-rebounded the hosts by 15 boards (53-37), but converted their 16 offensive rebounds into only four points. Medaille didn't do much better only tallying seven second-chance points.
Both teams shot in the low thirties from the field with Medaille knocking down 32.2% and Hilbert trailing right behind at 31.7%. The difference in the game turned out to be the foul line and three point arc.
Hilbert scored one more bucket than Medaille, but the Mavs connected for six 3-pointers while the Hawks suffered from long distance hitting only two. While Medaille converted 17 free throws (65.4%), Hilbert struggled making only 8-of-19 (42.1%).
Medaille carried a ten-point lead into the locker room by intermission. Rogers tallied six points and eight rebounds after 19-minutes of action. Ebert and
Wyann Jackson each connected on 2-of-3 shots from the field and
Emily Speidel earned the Hawks only three point shot in the first half.
Hilbert cut the deficit to six points twice in the second half. The Hawks went on a 4-0 run to open the second period but fell behind by double-digits less than two minutes later. After both teams traded baskets for several minutes, Hilbert found its grove again. The Hawks went on a 7-0 run which started with a
Amber Hay steal and two back-to-back lay-ups by Rogers.
Jennifer Colvin knocked down a three-pointer with 4:15 remaining. Hilbert did not string together another run to close out the game and fell by 11 points.
Shannon Rogers led the Hawks with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Kelsi Ebert added 12 points and nine caroms.
Emily Speidel and
Wyann Jackson matched with six points but Jackson picked up six rebounds as well.
