Corts Becomes All Time Leader, Hawks Dominate Offensive Glass in Win

CRESSON, Pa. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team battled back from a rough second quarter performance, needing a big second half turnaround which led to a 54-41 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference  victory over Mt. Aloysius this afternoon.

Hilbert improved to 15-4 overall and hit the double-digit win record at 10-2, maintaining their top ranking in the conference,  just as all teams begin the second round of AMCC games.

Junior Taylor Corts become the Hawks' All Time leader in 3-Point makes today and currently stands at 125 hits in 2.5 years of action.

Mt. Aloysius dropped to the middle of the AMCC pack at 5-7 and 5-14 overall.

Ashley Repine earned game-high honors in scoring (14 points), rebounds (11) and blocks (three).  She notched her sixth double-double this season proving to be a reliable force in the paint.

Hilbert built a 12-11 lead after ten minutes of action.  The Mounties reversed their fortunes in the second quarter after they outscored Hilbert 12-7 riding a low-scoring 23-19 lead into the break.

The Hawks woke up in the third quarter posting a 19-8 advantage and continued to outpace the hosts, 16-10 in the final frame.

The second quarter was hurtful to the Hawks as they converted only 3-of-15 shots from the floor.  The bright spot was their six offensive rebounds in that period which led to additional scoring chances.  By the final horn, Hilbert rebounded to a 35.6 percent shooting performance from the field.

Katelyn Proy and Repine combined for six team blocks which contributed to the Hawks defensive pressure holding the hosts to just 25.5 percent.

There were seven lead changes in the first quarter which featured Emma Fredo grabbing two of her five offensive rebounds, one of which she turned into a three-point play.  Morgan McNeill drained a 3-pointer, forcing a 5-5 score just prior to Fredo's effort that gave the Hawks' their first lead in the game.  Emily Gawlak closed the quarter with a pair at the charity stripe and inside the paint for the 12-11 lead.

Repine sandwiched two buckets around Corts' career setting 3-pointer.  It took five minutes for Hilbert to tally two points and another three minutes before Corts broke the record in the second quarter.  The Hawks' six offensive rebounds kept play alive at their end of the floor and prevented the Mounties from running their offense at the other end of the floor.

Demi Battin's short jumper started and her long distance shot finished a 9-2 Hilbert run in the third session which game the Hawks a 38-31 lead heading into the final period.

All five players padded points on the score board for Hilbert at the start of the fourth. Gawlak's layup at 5:40 lifted the Royal and White to an 18-point lead and they never looked back the rest of the game.

Corts went 3-for-5 from deep and added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists while Gawlak tossed in 10 points.

Battin added seven points, two steals and earned game-high honors with four assists.  Fredo finished with five offensive rebounds (8 total) while Proy chipped in six points and five rebounds.

The Hawks return to the road this coming week when they travel to Pitt-Bradford January 30th for a 6pm rematch.  Hilbert needed 45 minutes in Hamburg to claim an 85-79 victory just two and a half weeks ago.
