Kisner Posts Double-Double in Hawks 83-74 Win Over Altoona

HAMBURG, N.Y. –    The Hilbert College women's basketball returned to action for the first time in 2020 and battled to an 83-74 victory over Penn State Altoona in the AMCC Game of the Week.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Hilbert 83 | Penn State Altoona 74
  • Location:   Hafner Recreation Center, Hamburg, NY
  • Records: Hilbert 9-3 (6-1 AMCC) | Penn State Altoona (7-4, 5-2 AMCC)
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Taylor Corts' 23 points lead four players who reached double digits in the scoring column while freshman Macy Kisner strung together a career-high 19 points and 13 rebounds collecting her first double-double of her collegiate career.  The Hawks limited Altoona on the scoreboard posting a season-high seven team blocks in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert owned the first quarter, outscoring the Lions 23-18. The Hawks offense was fueled by five long-distance hits yet when Altoona pulled within one point twice late in the session, Hilbert connected on back-to-back 3's.
  • Corts and Ashley Schroeder found their groove and created the seven point buffer before the start of the second quarter.
  • The Lions got back in the game by outscoring Hilbert 18-10 in the second period.
  • The Hawks had to sit down key players who were whistled with quick fouls in the early part of the quarter.
  • Coach Senefelder used a late-game offensive/defensive substitution pattern midway through the period and was able to stay in the game using that tactic.
  • Emily Gawlak scored six of the team's ten points as they trailed 36-33 by intermission.
  • Macy Kisner's hustle elevated the rest of her teammates in the second half.  The rookie forward scored 17 points, earned seven more rebounds, three more steals and two more blocks in 15 minutes of action.
  • The Hawks battled on the boards and penetrated to the hoop which resulted in 25 additional trips to the foul line by the final horn.
  • Hilbert knotted the game three times in the third quarter, but Altoona still held an edge on the scoreboard (59-55), thanks to a made shot from downtown just before the start of the fourth quarter.
  • Corts drilled a 3-pointer and Emma Fredo followed with a traditional 3-point play at 6:39 as they helped to lift the Hawks (63-61) for the first time in the second half.
  • Altoona responded with a five point swing and held the lead until Ashley Repine sank one of two at the charity stripe (67-67) at 4:45.
  • Corts and Gawlak fueled a 5-point run which set the tone the rest of the way.
  • Hilbert closed the game on a 16-7 spurt to ensure the second-seed in the league standings.
GAME NOTES
  • Hilbert and Altoona both shot 39.7 percent from the floor, but the Hawks went 22-30 at the foul line while the Lions hit 18-22 at the charity stripe.
  • The Hawks pulled down 19 offensive rebounds and built a 44-38 edge on the glass.  Kisner (5) and Gawlak (4) were aggressive looking for extra possessions for their teammates.
  • Hilbert forced 17 turnovers which led to 19 second-chance points.
  • Kisner and Gawlak (six assists) each tossed in 19 points and shared the ten Hilbert steals right down the middle.
  • Schroeder notched 10 points and added two blocked shots before leaving the court with an injury.
  • Finnley Christine led the Lions with 26 points and Alexis Cannistraci chipped in 18 points.
