Turnovers Hurt Hawks in AMCC Action

HAMBURG, N.Y. – After leading by nine points at half time, the Hilbert College women's basketball team slipped in a 59-54 AMCC defeat to Mount Aloysius this afternoon in the Hafner Recreation Center.

Shannon Rogers kept her double-double streak alive collecting 12 points and 16 rebounds (five offensive) and a team-high two steals (two blocks).  Katelyn Proy posted 12 points (three blocks) and Kelsi Ebert added 10 points.  Wyann Jackson was 2-for-3 from the floor and hit both three-point shots she attempted.

The Hawks outrebounded the Mounties by nine (41-32) and shot well from deep (7-10), but their 27 turnovers did them in down the stretch.  Mount Aloysius went 13 of 15 at the foul line and that charity stripe became their friend in the game's final minutes.

Hilbert built a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before the Mounties went on a 6-2 run to take their last lead in the first half at 5:42.  Jackson connected on consecutive 3-pointers to steal the lead back and added a pair of free throw to extend the difference to four.   Samantha Heiler hit another long ball pushing the Hawks up by six before the break.

Hilbert stretched the lead to 11 (24-13) to start the second quarter before Mount Aloysius went on a short 8-0 run cutting it to three points.  Emily Speidel knocked down a shot beyond the arc and Ebert canned another before intermission.

Hilbert held a 35-26 advantage in large part due to their shot selection and accuracy from the field.   The Hawks were hot, hitting 61.9% from the floor and 75% (6-8) beyond the 3-point line.

Hilbert cooled off in the third quarter and saw their early lead disappear with 6:08 on the clock.  The Mounties made two free throws to force a tie (37-37) and grabbed a two-point lead on their next possession.  Proy knotted the game for the last time at 3:06 (39-39) and then the visitors closed the quarter with a 4-2 spread, leading 43-41 heading into the final period.

Hilbert suffered through six turnovers in the last session, and after giving up a five-point lead on three separate occasions, they fell 59-54.

Hilbert finished the game shooting 42% from the field, 70% 3FG, and made 5 of 8 free throws attempted.

Hilbert has a full week off from contests and returns to action next Saturday, December 12 at Franciscan University.
