Softball Struggles Offensively In a Set of Losses

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hilbert College softball team struggled offensively and late-inning fielding errors hurt the Hawks who suffered a pair of losses today.

They opened the morning with an 8-1 loss to Waldorf College (IA) in the 9:30 am game and lost to SUNY Poly in the afternoon game to move to 3-5 while down in Myrtle Beach.

Jenna Castricone, who earned the solo RBI off a double in the bottom of the fifth, was joined by Anndrea Quiroga and Crystal Hailey as the only Hawks to make contact at the plate against Waldorf.   The Warriors' Maggie Hawley sent nine Hilbert batters back to the dug-out and created contact off the bat that lead to 12 defensive outs behind her.

Victoria Dzaak took her second loss of the season going four innings striking out three with a pair of walks and three earned runs.  Jaelyn Gotham closed the final three innings giving up five hits and one earned run.

Hilbert (3-4) committed eight errors over the course of the seven inning game.  The Hawks were carded with four errors in the fifth inning when Waldorf stretched a 4-1 game to the final, 8-1.

Alexandria Wankel went 2 for 2 against SUNY Poly and drove in the Hawks' only run in the second inning.

Rachel Allen dropped to 2-2 on the season after giving up eight hits with four earned runs after three innings of work.  She and Jaelyn Gotham each struck two out in the five inning contest.

The Wildcats scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of 2nd and Hilbert responded with the solo run at the bottom half.

Where fielding errors hurt the Hawks in the morning game, they took care of business in the second game.  SUNY Poly got on base with fielder's choice taps and moved around the horn off stolen bases, passed balls or wild pitches, as well as hits.  The Wildcats created eight runs out of eight hits in the 3rd and 5th innings for the win.

Hilbert closes their spring training out tomorrow with three straight games begins at 9:30 am.  All three games will be live-streamed - follow this link
