Avallone Hits Eighth Homer, Pioneers Split with La Roche

The Alfred State baseball team (16-17, 10-2) split their doubleheader with the La Roche University RedHawks (11-15, 7-5) at Alfred State College on Sunday afternoon.

Game one: ASC 3, LRU 2

The Pioneers recorded 8 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 error.

The RedHawks recorded 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 2-for-2 with 1 RBI and 1 run. He hit his 8th homerun of the season and continues to lead the AMCC.

Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) and Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) recorded 1 RBI each.

What Happened:

The RedHawks recorded the first run of the game during the top of the third inning.

The Pioneers scored three unanswered runs.

In the bottom of the third Curabba singled to center field plating Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) and Burdett singled to left field bringing home Curabba.

During the bottom of the fifth inning Avallone hit a home run to left field giving the Pioneers the win for the first game.

Pioneer Pitching:

AJ Gartland (W, 4-4) (Irondequoit) pitched 5 innings and allowed 1 hit, 1 run, walked 3 and struck out 4.

Game two: ASC 5, LRU 7

The Pioneers recorded 9 hits, 5 runs, 5 RBIs and 2 errors.

The RedHawks recorded 16 hits, 7 runs, 7 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Gavin Moore (Hilton) went 3-for-5 with 3 runs.

Curabba went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 1 run.

Avallone recorded 2 RBIs and  Nick Serce (Irondequoit) had 1 RBI.

What happened:

The second game between the Pioneers and the RedHawks was a nail-biter finishing in extra innings.

The RedHawks scored a double in the top of the fifth inning.

During the bottom of the sixth inning Curabba singled to center field plating Barinas and Avallone doubled to left field bringing home Curabba and Moore.

In the top of the eighth inning the RedHawks scored another run.

The Pioneers answered right back during the bottom of the eighth inning. Moore scored on an error by the RedHawks second baseman.

The RedHawks scored in the nineth inning to tie the game.  Then they scored 3 times during the top of the tenth inning.

Serce singled to right field bringing home Moore during the bottom of the tenth inning.

Pioneer Pitching:

Jack Josephson (Penfield) pitched 8 innings and allowed 11 hits, 4 runs, walked 2 and struck out 9.

The Pioneers will play a double header against Penn State-Behrend starting at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 26th.
