Softball Defeats Cairn 10-7 on Final Day of Spring Break Trip

N. MYRTLE BEACH - La Roche softball improved to 6-1 Friday afternoon, their best start in over a decade, after taking down Cairn University in their final game of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, 10-7. The Redhawks trailed by three runs heading into the bottom of the sixth before rattling off six runs to swap the three run lead in their favor. Alexa Young (4-0) returned and closed out the game in the seventh to earn her first save of the season. LRU hit 16-34 (.471) in the win, a season-high in hits and batting average for the black and red. Five Redhawks recorded multiple hits and three posted multiple RBI.

At the Plate

The Redhawks scored in four of the six innings they batted and still left nine runners on base. Senior INF Kayla Ordos (Linesville, PA/Conneaut Area) posted a season and team-high 3 RBI, batting 2-4 and scoring a run. Ordos put LRU ahead in the 6th when she drilled a 2-run single. She has posted multiple RBI in three games this season.

Junior 2B Devan Smith extended her hitting streak to seven games (nine games dating back to last season) going 3-4 and recording an RBI. Junior OF Alexis Medva got a season-high three hits in four at bats, driving in two RBI and stealing a base. Sophomore CF/C Kelly Denk and Junior OF Sydnee Deshong both contributed two hits and DeShong got two RBI. Freshman Abby Hoffman recorded her first XBH of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Hoffman has got a hit in all five of her appearances. Junior SS Meghan Haynes recorded the Redhawks final RBI, a single in the 6th. Haynes has posted four RBI in her last four games.

On the Mound

Junior RHP Alexa Young (Altoona, PA/Altoona) came through once again for LRU. Young pitched the first four innings and allowed just two runs and three hits. Freshman RHP Carlie Dillon (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Twp) entered the game in the fifth inning, she allowed five runs on eight hits in two innings but earned the win to improve to 2-1. Alexa returned for the final inning where she allowed just one hit and solidified the Redhawks come back to grab the save.
