Allegheny Tops Volleyball in Straight Sets

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Women's volleyball was defeated tonight by non-conference opponent Allegheny College three sets to none at the David V. Wise Sport and Fitness Center. Heading into tonight's performance, La Roche had won three of their last four matches while the Gators had lost nine straight, seven of which were shutouts. La Roche was also coming off a 3-1 win against Pitt Greensburg, one of the seven teams who shutout Allegheny during their losing steak. Tonight the Redhawks were limited offensively to only 23 kills in the match, their fourth lowest mark in a single game this season. The Gators finished with 40 kills on an efficient .196 hitting percentage.

Synopsis: 

Allegheny got out to a quick start taking a 9-2 lead to start the first set. Then La Roche went a 7-0 run of their own to even the score. The Gators would finish the set on a 16-5 run to go up 1-0. 

La Roche came out swinging in the first set taking a 4-0 lead early but soon found themselves down 17-10. The Redhawks were about to pull within one point late but never was able to reconquer the lead and fell in the second set 23-25. 

In the third set, Allegheny got out to a 6-0 lead early and never looked back. The gators would go on win to win the final set 16-25 and hand the Redhawks their eighth shutout loss this season. Most of the Redhawks struggles have came in road play this year. Currently, La Roche post a 2-12 record at away and neutral competition sites. On the contrary, at home, the Redhawks are 5-2. 


LEADING THE ATTACK: Senior middle hitter Christine Aland led La Roche with seven kills on the night, tied for her second highest mark in a single match this season. Only four other Redhawks had multiple kills in the contest. 

SET EM' UP: Senior setter Bailey McDonald had 18 of the Redhawks 21 assists, their 5th lowest amount in a single-match this season. 

BACK ROW PLAY: Senior libero Erin Connor led La Roche with 13 kills on the night. Connor is only one dig away from hitting 300 this season (299, 4th in the AMCC). 

AT THE NET: Junior middle hitter Ingrid Spear tacked on two more solo-blocks in tonight's match. Spear currently leads the AMCC with 39 solo blocks this season, 15 more than the next highest mark in the conference. 

NEXT UP: La Roche returns to conference play next Wednesday, October 16th when they take on Penn St. Altoona at the Kerr Sport & Fitness Center. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
