Baseball Sweeps Buffalo Cup Series and Ties AMCC Win Record

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Hilbert College baseball team earned two wins, 6-0 and a 13-7, over  D'Youville College this afternoon and claimed their first Buffalo Cup series sweep.

The Hawks improved to 6-8 in AMCC action and kept their hopes alive for an appearance in post-season play in two weeks.  With only 14 conference games played to date, Hilbert is two games behind most of the rest of the league.  They currently sit in 8th place, but could jump up a few slots once they complete their remaining games.

Prior to the start of the first game, the baseball team honored seniors Winfred Nelson and Eric Flores, two players who have given a lot to the program during their four-year careers.

Treyton delaCuesta had a great series against the Spartans.  He went 3-for-7, finished with 5RBI behind a 3-run home run and scored four runs himself, along with a stolen base.  He hit a triple and a double besides his home run as Hilbert improved to 9-20 overall.

Connor Duck finished with four stolen bases as he helped his Hawks pick eight during the series.

Nelson earned his second win of the season in the opening game and Zachary Crane collected his fourth in the nightcap.

GAME TWO

Hilbert built a 9-0 lead through three innings and added three more runs in the 5th to build a 12-0 advantage by the time the Spartans got on the score board.  D'Youville manufactured three runs in the top of the 6th and four more in the 8th.   Hilbert added an insurance run in the bottom half of the 8th and shut them down at the top of the final inning for the win.

delaCuesta went 2-for-4, hit his 3-run home run in the second inning and scored three runs.

Ian Moran went 3-for-5 and Tristan Aldinger and Ryan Perrin added a pair of hits as well.

Zachary Crane (4-3) went five innings with three hits and no runs scored.

After the Hawks earned their nightcap victory, they tied the program's AMCC win record at six games.  Hilbert has two more league double headers left on the schedule and are excited about the potential to break that win record.

GAME ONE

The Hawks posted their first shut-out victory since they defeated D'Youville back in April 2015.

Hilbert built a 3-0 advantage through the 2nd and added three more in the bottom of the 4th for the win.

Moran went 2-for-3 as did Duck, and they both scored a pair of runs.

Winfred Nelson (2-4) went four innings on the mound, striking out four while at the same time leading the Hawks with 2RBI.

Nelson and Eric Flores were the only two players to knock in runs off hits and Nelson joined delaCuesta and Duck with doubles while Perrin, Duck (2) and Moran stole a base in the opening game.

Hilbert will travel to McCarthy Park in North Buffalo May 1st for their make-up game against Medaille and then host Pitt-Greensburg May 2nd in another make-up series.
