Women's Basketball Picks Up Another AMCC and Buffalo Cup Win Over Medaille

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team battled in a hard-fought 79-69 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over Medaille College tonight.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Hilbert 79 | Medaille 69
  • Location:   Hafner Recreation Center, Hamburg, NY
  • Records: Hilbert 5-3 (2-1 AMCC) | Medaille 0-6 (0-2 AMCC)
  • The women's basketball program celebrated seniors Taylor Corts and Emily Gawlak on their 1,000 Point milestone prior to tip-off.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert built a 20-13 lead after the first quarter fueled by Taylor Corts, Emily Gawlak and Macy Kisner's shooting performances and their efforts were capped off by Grace Zabawa's first points scored in the Hafner this season.
  • It took less than two minutes for the Hawks to extend their lead to double digits but the Mavs fought back and cut the difference to six points with seven minutes on the clock.
  • But Demi Battin started a Hilbert run, hitting her first 3-pointer of the night swinging the momentum in Hilbert's favor as they went to the locker room on top, 39-26 .
  • Hilbert doubled-up Medaille 22-12 on the glass, picking the Mavs for nine offensive rebounds in the first 20- minutesof action.
  • Emma Fredo knocked-down a "three" at the start of the third quarter and lifted Hilbert by 14 points (42-28).
  • The Hawks continued to put points on the board but they didn't limit the Mavericks offensively as the Mavs outscored Hilbert 26-18 in the third frame.
  • Now at the start of the fourth, Battin drilled back-to-back shots from downtown before Grace Zabawa reached from that distance too.  All three makes came at crucial times when Medaille was making a furious come-back attempt.
  • Confident shooting pushed the Hawks over the double figure hump each time as they held on for the 10-point win.
GAME NOTES
  • Four Hawks posted double figure points, led by Gawlak's 18.  Corts was one point shy with 17 and Battin and Kisner each chipped in 11 points.
  • Hilbert closed the game with a rebounding advantage (34-32) and pulled down 15 offensive boards which led to and 18-5 second chance advantage.  Fredo led the Hawks with seven rebounds.
  • The Hawks picked up their defensive intensity as the game wore on, and they forced 24 turnovers, if at times, just taking the ball off the dribble from the guests.  Hilbert turned those steals into 24 points and outscored Medaille 14-4 in fastbreak points.
  • Ashley Schroeder shared game-high assist total (7) with Medaille's Erin Hardick who also led the Mavs with 22 points.
  • Hilbert struggled from the foul line, hitting only 11-of-18, but connected on 43.9 percent (29-66) from the floor and produced their most efficient night beyond the arc, hitting 32.3 percent (10-of-31).
