Houghton Takes Season Opener

Houghton College defeated Alfred State in the 2021 season opener for both teams. The Pioneers were playing for the first time since October 2019.

Moriah Steffen scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute when she found the back of the net after getting a pass from Rileigh Studley. Houghton held a 9-5 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.

Sarah Potocki doubled the lead 3:50 into the 2nd half with a goal and Sierra Dibble added an insurance goal in the 74th minute with a tally of her own. The Highlanders held a slight 6-5 shot advantage in the 2nd.

Megan Merrifield made three saves in just over 77 minutes and Alliah Fluent made a save in the final 12:48 to combine for the shutout. Sierra Schofield (Delran, NJ) made three saves for the Pioneers in the 1st half.

Alfred State is back in action on Saturday when they host St. Vincent at 11 a.m.
