Pioneers Sweep Medaille at Home to Extend Win Streak

The Alfred State baseball team (10-15, 4-0 AMCC) swept the Medaille College Mavericks (1-10, 0-4 AMCC) on Tuesday afternoon at home to extend their win streak to eight games.

Game one: ASC 11, MC 5 (7 innings)

The Pioneers recorded 7 hits, 5 runs, 5 RBIs and 0 errors.

The Mavericks recorded 14 hits, 11 runs, 11 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) went 2-for-2 with 1 RBI.

Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) had 3 RBIs.

What Happened:

The Pioneers showed no mercy to the Mavericks during the first game.

During the bottom of the second inning Lansing started them off with a single to center field bringing home Mersmann and Dickerson. Gavin Moore (Hilton) hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating Lansing.

The Mavericks got their first run in the top of the third making the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the third Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy).

During the bottom of the fourth inning Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) doubled to center field platting Barinas.

The Mavericks scored another run in the fifth.

The Pioneers then recorded six straight runs.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Lansing reached on a fielder's choice advancing to second base bringing home Mersmann. Barinas singled to left field plating Lansing.

During the bottom of the sixth inning Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) hit a sacrifice fly to center field advancing Zachary Morse (Canandaigua) to third base and plating Joseph Schatz (Campbell Hall. NY / Goshen).

Mersmann singled to right field bringing home Morse. Dickerson singled to right field bringing home Mersmann. Barinas singled to right field plating Lansing.

The Mavericks doubled with two players on base to finish the first game 11-5.

Pioneer Pitching:

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) pitched 5 innings and allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, walked 4 and struck out 6.

James Bilcik (Nanuet) pitched 2 innings and allowed 3 hits, 3 runs, walked 1 and struck out 2.

Game two: ASC 12, MC 2 (7 innings, 10-run rule)

The Pioneers recorded 14 hits, 12 runs, 12 RBIs and 2 errors.

The Mavericks recorded 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs.

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

What happened:

The Pioneers made sure they took care of business in the second game recording five runs in the first inning.

During the first inning there was a error by the short stop and Gavin Moore (Hilton) scored. Burdett doubled to center field plating Avallone and Nick Serce (Irondequoit). Mersmann doubled to left center plating Burdett. Dickerson singled to left field bringing home Mesmann. Barinas singled bringing home Dickerson.

The Mavericks scored during the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the second Jesse Kabat (Seneca Falls, NY / Mynderse Academy) doubled to center field plating Moore. Burdett singled to left field bringing home Kabat and Mersmann singled bringing home Burdett.

The Mavericks recorded their second run of the game during the top of the seventh inning.

During the bottom of the seventh inning Dickerson hit a homer. Barinas tripled and scored on the throw along with Joseph Schatz (Campbell Hall. NY / Goshen).

Pioneer Pitching:

Chris Catoire (W, 3-0) (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) pitched 7 innings and allowed 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 4.

The Pioneers head to Penn St.-Altoona on Saturday April, 9 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
