Hawks Battle at the Golden Flyer Invitational

Box Score 2 Rochester, N.Y. - The Hilbert College men's volleyball team traveled to #8 Nazareth College for the opening day of the 2015 Golden Flyer Invitational today. The Hawks fell to the host school in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) and then in four sets to Ramapo College of New Jersey (25-27, 25-23, 25-13, 25-17).
In the opening game, the Hawks battled Nazareth to a 9-9 score. The Golden Flyers scored nine out of the next twelve points to pull away with the set, as Hilbert fell 25-17. In the second set, the Hawks trailed 3-0 and came back to make it 5-4. Nazareth used Hilbert errors to gain the 18-11 advantage. The Hawks responded with a strong sequence of points, pulling the set within two (20-18). Naz went on to claim the set 25-20. After taking the 2-0 lead in the third set, Hilbert could not hold off the Golden Flyers and
dropped the set (25-16) and the game.
Korey Schwab tallied seven kills, six digs, and one assist, while
Adam Heftka recorded a team-high 15 assists.
Andrew Duncan finished with three kills in the loss.
The Hawks won their first set of the season, taking the opening set 27-25, over Ramapo College in the second game of the day. Despite trailing by five twice throughout the set, the Hawks battled their way back to a 24-21 score. They were one point away from dropping the set, but the Hawks used a kill by
Brett Kane, a
David Mellerski ace, and a block by Schwab to take the 25-24 lead. Schwab finished the set with a kill to give the Hawks the win, 27-25. Hilbert continued to have the momentum into the second, leading for most of the set. Ramapo was able to tie the game at 14 and never trailed again, winning 25-23. During the next two games the Hawks struggled to put points on the board and fell 25-13 and 25-17.
Schwab continued his strong hitting snagging nine kills and five digs.
Brett Kane added five kills and four digs in the loss.
Ryan Ratajczak was able to pick up nine digs and Heftka dished off another 16 assists.
The Hawks (0-8) face Wells College and Thiel College tomorrow in the second day of the Golden Flyer Invitational.
