BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's soccer team came up with the short straw on day two at the Spartan Showcase. The Hawks slipped in a 3-0 defeat to Waynesburg University in a mid-afternoon game at D'Youville College's Dobson Field.
The Hawks, playing with a short bench, survived a second day on the hot turf and dropped to 0-2 at the start of their season.
Hilbert's defense limited the YellowJackets to seven shots and one goal in the first half. Sophomore
Brianna Stegmeier was credited with three saves in the first forty-five.
Junior
Gina Mallone snuck past Waynesburg's defense and took a pair of shots in the second half but Hilbert came up empty on the scoreboard. The out-of-town guests scored two goals less than three minutes apart in the final seven minutes of the game to seal the deal.
Stegmeier finished with five saves for the day and 13 for the weekend.
The Hawks have one mid-week game on the road next week before they host their home opener September 8. Hilbert's 7 pm game at Alfred University will be live streamed (
