Softball Drops Two in Spring Games Opener

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona softball team started its 2022 schedule on Saturday in The Spring Games, and the Lions were handed a pair of losses at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.

Penn State Altoona (0-2) fell 12-7 to Massachusetts-Dartmouth in game one, then suffered a 7-3 loss to Bridgewater State University in game two.

Game One: Mass.-Dartmouth 12, Penn State Altoona 7

Penn State Altoona led 3-2 through five complete innings, but UMD (1-0) scored 10 runs over the final two innings to come back and ultimately win by five.

Olivia Smith (Martinsburg, PA/Central) was 4-for-4 at the plate for the Lions with a double and four runs batted in. Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.

Casey Reese (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) got the start at pitcher and was saddled with the loss, after she tossed 5 1/3 innings and yielded four earned runs. Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and surrendered a pair of earned runs.

Smith's two-run double in the bottom of the first put Penn State Altoona on the board. After UMD picked up a run in the second inning, Smith's RBI single in the third increased the Lions' lead to 3-1.

The Corsairs picked up a run in the fifth to trim the Lions' lead to 3-2, then got eight runs across in the sixth to establish a 10-3 lead.

Penn State Altoona answered with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Brooke Boonie (Petersburg, PA/Juniata Valley) scored on an error, and Colledge, Smith, and Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) each had RBI singles to bring the Lions back to within three, 10-7.

But UMD tacked two more runs on to their total in the seventh, and the Corsairs prevailed 12-7.

Game Two: Bridgewater State 7, Penn State Altoona 3

Bridgewater State (2-0) led 6-1 after five, en route to a 7-3 win over Penn State Altoona.

Katie College (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) and Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) each had a two-hit game for Penn State Altoona. College was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Feathers went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Makenzie Lukehart (Utahville, PA/Glendale) started in the circle for the Lions and took the loss, as she tossed five innings while surrendering three earned runs. Fisher pitched one inning in relief, yielding one run.

Trailing 3-0, Maelyn Payne's (Huntingdon, PA/Juniata Valley) fielder's choice in the top of the fourth drove Smith home to get Penn State Altoona on the scoreboard.

But the Bears added three more runs on to their total in the bottom of the fifth, extending their lead to 6-1.

College's two-run double to right-center in the sixth made it a three-run game, 6-3, but Bridgewater State added one more run to its lead in the seventh and defeated the Lions by four.

Penn State Altoona softball returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 6, facing Capital University at 10:30 a.m. and Alfred University at 12:45 p.m. Both games will be played at Sleepy Hollow's Field #5 in Leesburg.
