Pioneers Split with Mount Aloysius on Senior Day

The Alfred State baseball team (17-20, 11-5 AMCC) split with the Mount Aloysius Mounties (21-12, 9-5 AMCC) at Alfred State College on Saturday afternoon.

Before their doubleheader the Pioneers honored their eight seniors; Matteo Avallone, Chris Catoire, Dom Francavilla, Connor Hong, Brody Burdett, Ryan Santiago, AJ Gartland and Jesse Kabat.

Game one: ASC 1, MAC 7

The Pioneers recorded 4 hits, 1 run, 1 RBI and 0 errors.

The Mounties recorded 11 hits, 7 runs, 7 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI.

What Happened:

The Pioneers got the first run of the day.

During the bottom of the first inning Avallone doubled to right center plating Nick Serce (Irondequoit).

The Mounties scored seven unanswered runs to finish the game.  

Pioneer Pitching:

AJ Gartland (L, 4-5) (Irondequoit) pitched 5 innings and allowed 11 hits, 7 runs, walked 0 and struck out 3.

Chris Baldwin (Patchogue- Medford) pitched 1 innings and allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, walked 0 and struck out 1.

Game two: ASC 8, MAC 2

The Pioneers recorded 10 hits, 8 runs, 7 RBIs and 0 errors.

The Mounties recorded 9 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) recorded 4 RBIs while going 2-for-4.

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer), Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck), and Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) recorded 1 RBI each

What happened:

The Pioneers got the first run again in the second game.

During the bottom of the first inning Burdett hit a homer bringing in Avallone and Gavin Moore (Hilton).

During the bottom of the second inning Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Mounties scored two runs in the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Mersmann singled to left field plating Serce and Dickerson doubled to right field plating Avallone.

In the seventh inning Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) scored on an error by the shortstop and Burdett singled to center field bringing home Serce.

Pioneer Pitching:

Jack Josephson (W, 5-1) (Penfield) pitched 9 innings and allowed 9 hits, 2 runs, walked 2 and struck out 4.

The Pioneers host Ithaca in a single game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3.
