Softball Splits With Franciscan

ERIE, Pa. – The Hilbert College softball team took a short drive down the New York State thruway in order to host a home game in northeast Pa April 22.   The Hawks split the AMCC double header with Franciscan, winning the opening game 4-2 before playing to a 3-1 loss in the night cap.

Morgan Grosch made a spectacular catch in the seventh inning to preserve the win before the Barons pitching staff shut down Hilbert's bats in the night cap.

GAME 1

After spotting the Barons one run in the top of the game, Hilbert strung three runs together in the second and third innings to build at 3-1 lead through the 4th.  A fielding error by Franciscan gave Jenna Castricone a window of opportunity to score Hilbert's first run and when Nateal Papasergi stole second base, Morgan Grosch stole home the very next play.  Morgan McNeill knocked in Rebecca Bailey in the bottom of the third for the quick 2-run lead.

Castricone hit a sac fly in the fifth pushing Bailey home for her second run of the game (4-1) before Hilbert's defense headed to the field.  Franciscan earned three hits in the sixth, scored once slicing the difference to two runs, and they were knocking on the door in the 7th.  Back-to-back infield ground-outs led to the Morgan Grosch's pop-up catch to close the game with a win.

Rachel Allen tossed seven innings, gave up five hits, two earned runs with four strike outs for her third win of the season.

Allen and Bailey went 2-for-3 with Bailey scoring half of the Hawks runs.

GAME 2

Victoria Dzaak went the full distance in the circle with four hits, one earned run and one strike out.

The Hawks earned three hits in the game and scored their solo run in the 5th inning off a Papasergi single to the right field which sent Gabriella Bongiorno home.

The Barons first two runs came in the second inning before Hilbert trimmed it, 2-1.  Franciscan singled in the seventh for the final run of the game.

Dazaak and Bongiorno joined Papasergi with the limited hits in the game.

The Hawks return to the road for their 5pm non-conference double-header at Houghton College April 24.
