Women’s Tennis Loses Season Opener 8-1

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team started its 2021-22 schedule on Wednesday, when the Lions suffered an 8-1 loss to non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College at The Summit Tennis and Athletic Club.

St. Vincent (1-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match, sweeping doubles play by scores of 8-0, 8-1, and 8-1. The Bearcats then took five out of six singles matches to earn the seven-point win on the day.

Penn State Altoona (0-1) picked up its lone point in No. 6 singles, where Jenna Bartlett (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) defeated her opponent by a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

The Lions also saw two back-and-forth singles matches not go their way. Dabin Shin (Palisades Park, NJ/Palisades Park) won the opening set of her No. 3 singles match 6-4, then saw her opponent battle back to win the next set 6-0 before taking the tiebreaker 10-2. In the No. 5 singles match, Stephanie Swain (Yadkin County, NC/Forbush) won the first set 7-5 before her opponent prevailed 6-3 in the second set and pulled out a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker.

Penn State Altoona women's tennis will look to bounce back this weekend, when the Lions will travel to western New York for a pair of matches on Saturday, September 18. At 1:00 p.m., Penn State Altoona will start its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule with a match against Medaille College. Later that day, at 5:30 p.m., the Lions will go up against former AMCC opponent and current Division II institution D'Youville College.
